Japanese officials expressed regrets over a plaque to be built in a small town in the U.S. which commemorates the comfort women of World War II, the Wall Street Journal online reported on Wednesday.
Palisades Park, a northern area of New Jersey with a Korean population of more than 8 percent, had a visit from Japanese consular officials saying they would plant Japanese cherry blossom trees along the city’s main road and financially support the promotion of relations between the U.S. and Japan, but euphemistically asked the city to take down a plaque that honors Asian comfort women in return.
The Japanese consulate in New York said, “It is our sincere hope that we can focus on working constructively together and move forward and not politicize this (comfort women) issue,” on behalf of the Japanese Premier Shinzo Abe.
Surviving comfort women and their supporters hold the "Wednesday Demonstration for the Solution of the Japanese Military Sexual Slavery Issue" on a weekly basis in front of the Japanese Embassy in Korea.
“It is an absurd not to apologize for their own faults,” said Kim Young-jo, an actor who participated in the 1050th Wednesday rally.
The Palisades Park city government turned down the offer from the Japanese consul, claiming the second plaque would be put up as scheduled.

위안부기념비 건립에 관해 총영사관은 “이번 (위안부)문제를 정치적으로 문제삼지 않고 합심하여 건설적인 협력관계를 구축하길 진실로 희망한다” 는 신조 아베 일본총리의 말을 전했다.
세계2차대전에서 살아남은 위안부 할머니들은 시민들과 함께 20년 전부터 일본대사관 앞에서 사과를 받기 위한 수요집회를 열리고 있다.
1050번째 수요집회에 참가한 배우 김영조는 “자신들의 잘못을 인정하지 않는 모습이 이해가 안 갑니다” 라고 언급한 바 있다.
한편 팰리세이즈 파크는 일본 총영사관의 제의를 거절하고 도시의 두 번째 위안부 기념비를 예정대로 세울 예정이라고 밝혔다. (박수희 인턴기자 / 코리아헤럴드)
