Coupang Logistics Service, a delivery service provider under retail giant Coupang, will invest approximately 42 billion won ($31 million) to build an AI-powered smart logistics center in Busan.

CLS signed a memorandum of understanding with Busan Metropolitan City on Thursday to establish the facility in the port city. The agreement was signed at an investment promotion event for companies based outside the capital region.

Under the MOU, CLS will create approximately 670 direct and indirect jobs, while Busan City will provide administrative support to facilitate its implementation. The project is part of the city's efforts to attract corporate investment, expand local employment and stimulate the regional economy.

The new center, which aims to begin trial operations within this year, will occupy four floors spanning approximately 44,000 square meters in an eight-story logistics facility. It will combine logistics processing and delivery functions, using AI-based systems to position products closer to customers ahead of anticipated orders, helping speed up dispatch and improve operational efficiency and customer service.

CLS has continued to expand its logistics infrastructure across Korea, with investments in Daegu, Jincheon, Chilgok, Gimhae and Jangseong. The company expects its regional investments and hiring to help strengthen employment opportunities and encourage young people to settle outside the Seoul metropolitan area.

“This investment in Busan will contribute to the local economy and job creation while further strengthening our customer service competitiveness,” CLS CEO Hong Yong-jun said.

“The investment reflects Busan's logistics competitiveness and growth potential as a maritime hub,” Busan Mayor Chun Jae-soo said. “The city will provide active support to ensure the project proceeds smoothly.”
