Big Shot Pictures to work with Devsisters on film's core creative direction
The popular Korean gaming franchise CookieRun is being adapted into a Hollywood feature film, with a release planned for 2029 to mark the franchise's 20th anniversary.
Los Angeles-based studio Big Shot Pictures will oversee production of the film, working closely with Devsisters, the company behind the franchise, to shape its core creative direction. The studio was founded by Brian Robbins, former co-CEO of Paramount Global and former president of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon.
Devsisters CEO Cho Kil-hyeon said in a press release, “Since its beginnings as a mobile game, CookieRun has continued to expand into diverse areas. Through the new challenge of bringing the franchise to the cinematic screen, we will offer an intellectual property experience distinct from those available on existing platforms.”
CookieRun originated in 2009 with the mobile running game OvenBreak, before gaining broader recognition with the 2013 release of CookieRun for Kakao, which laid the groundwork for the franchise's expansion.
Since then, the series has branched into multiple genres, including the running action game CookieRun: OvenBreak and the role-playing game CookieRun: Kingdom. During that time, Devsisters has moved into trading card games, merchandise, publishing, media, exhibitions, food and beverage, and licensing.
According to Devsisters, the franchise has accumulated more than 300 million users and generated over 1.5 trillion won ($1.1 billion) in cumulative revenue to date.
