President Lee Jae Myung will embark on a seven-day trip to the American continent, Lee's national security adviser Wi Sung-lac said in a briefing Monday.
According to Wi, Lee will travel to New York on Monday on the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly, where he will meet attending leaders including US President Donald Trump.
Lee is set to deliver a keynote speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
In his speech, Lee will propose a reform of the United Nations to better resolve international problems, while laying out South Korea's contributions to the reform effort, Wi said. Lee will also pitch South Korea's blueprint for the peaceful coexistence of the two Koreas on the Korean Peninsula.
Also during his stay in New York, Lee will meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss peace on the Korean Peninsula.
From New York, Lee will travel to Mexico for a state visit and hold a summit with his counterpart Claudia Sheinbaum, before returning to Seoul on Sunday.
The Korea-Mexico summit is set for Thursday, when Lee will also attend a luncheon hosted by the Mexican president. Lee will leave Mexico on Saturday morning.
Lee's trip comes at a time when the president has been experiencing low approval ratings in recent months.
According to Monday's opinion poll by Realmeter, Lee's approval rating came to 34.8 percent, inching up 1 percentage point from a week prior. It was the first time Lee's approval rating had rebounded in 10 weeks.
