Two-time Oscar winner to give master class at the 31st Busan International Film Festival
Alfonso Cuaron is coming to Korea for the first time as a guest of the 31st Busan International Film Festival next month, organizers announced Friday.
Cuaron will attend the opening ceremony and give a master class on his filmmaking, according to the festival. The Mexican filmmaker has won the Academy Award for best director twice, for "Gravity" (2013) and "Roma" (2018). A special IMAX screening of "Gravity" is also on the program.
Cuaron will be joined by his son and frequent collaborator, Jonas Cuaron, who cowrote "Gravity." The younger Cuaron is bringing his latest feature, "Campeon Gabacho," which he coproduced with his father, to the festival for its Asian premiere in the World Cinema section.
Starring Juan Daniel Garcia Trevino, Leslie Grace, Ruben Blades, Eddie Marsan, Rosario Dawson and Cheech Marin, the film is a comedy about a Mexican immigrant trying to build a life in the US.
The elder Cuaron broke through with "Y Tu Mama Tambien" in 2001. He went on to direct "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" (2004) and made his name as a leading visual stylist of his generation with the long, unbroken takes of "Children of Men" (2006).
Cuaron is the latest addition to a star-studded guest list for this year's festival. Malaysian actor Michelle Yeoh, who won the best actress Oscar for 'Everything Everywhere All at Once,' returns to Busan for the first time in 15 years to accept the asian filmmaker of the year award.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, Isabelle Huppert, Hirokazu Koreeda, Lee Chang-dong and Na Hong-jin will also attend. Zhang Yimou presides over the seven-member main competition jury, which will choose the winners from 13 titles.
The festival runs Oct. 6-15 at the Busan Cinema Center and other venues across the southern port city.
