One of Nexon Game’s biggest upcoming games, Woochi the Wayfarer, is turning real Korean landscapes and cultural heritage into the backdrop for its fantasy world.

Nexon Games announced Monday that the company signed an agreement with the Korea Tourism Organization to support the development of Woochi the Wayfarer. Under the agreement, the tourism agency will provide Nexon Games with around 70,000 images and 1,000 video clips featuring natural landscapes, cultural heritage and other sites across Korea.

Nexon Games plans to use the materials provided by the KTO alongside resources gathered through its own location scouting to create the game’s environments and graphics. The company aims to build a Joseon-era fantasy world unique to Woochi the Wayfarer by reinterpreting real Korean landscapes through the game’s fictional setting.

Woochi the Wayfarer is a AAA single-player action-adventure game inspired by the classic Korean novel "Jeon Woo-chi-jeon." It follows Jeon Woo-chi, a Taoist wizard who uses mystical powers to battle supernatural creatures, in an original story based on the classic tale.

The game is among the most ambitious upcoming titles being developed by the Korean gaming giant. In the gaming industry, AAA generally refers to major, big-budget titles, although there is no formal definition or standardized benchmark. Such games remain relatively uncommon in Korea, where online titles have long dominated the market.

Nexon Games said in a press release that it will consider tourism promotion, marketing and other related projects as the game moves toward its release and subsequent business activities. The company added that it plans to continue discussions with the KTO on ways to promote the beauty of Korea at home and abroad.

“We will continue to enhance the quality of the Korean-inspired environments in the game through our collaboration with the KTO,” said Kang In-su, head of the general management division and CFO of Nexon Games.
