Samsung and SK chiefs expected to join Nvidia CEO at Korea Society gala as US investment and supply chain issues loom
Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won are expected to meet Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in New York later this month as they attend The Korea Society's annual gala on Sept. 28.
Lee and Chey recently accepted invitations to the event, according to industry sources Friday.
Huang will receive this year's Van Fleet Award in recognition of his contributions to Korea-US relations. Lee and Chey are expected to attend the ceremony and congratulate the Nvidia chief in person.
The three business leaders have forged close ties as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix expand their partnerships with Nvidia in the fast-growing artificial intelligence chip market.
Huang has met both Lee and Chey during previous visits to Korea.
The New York gathering comes as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix step up investments in the US, raising expectations that Lee and Chey could also engage with senior US business and political figures on investment, incentives and supply chain issues.
Chey is expected to attend the gala while in New York for events surrounding the UN General Assembly later this month. He is reportedly planning to travel to Mexico afterward to review SK's North American supply chain.
Lee is also expected to use his US trip to meet executives from major technology companies.
The Van Fleet Award, established in 1992, honors individuals or organizations that have contributed to Korea-US relations. It is named after Gen. James A. Van Fleet, who commanded the US Eighth Army during the Korean War and helped found The Korea Society in 1957.
