A 335-meter-long underground passage that remained closed beneath central Seoul for more than four decades opened Monday as a cultural venue, launching with an immersive exhibition to celebrate Big Bang’s 20th anniversary.
40년 넘게 서울 도심 아래에 폐쇄된 채 남아 있던 길이 335미터의 지하 통로가 월요일 문화공간으로 문을 열었다. 첫 행사로 빅뱅 데뷔 20주년을 기념하는 몰입형 전시가 마련됐다.
Located 13 meters below Seoul Plaza between City Hall and Euljiro 1 (il)-ga stations, the formerly sealed-off space, now known as K-Culture Station, measures 9.5 meters wide and covers 3,261 square meters.
시청역과 을지로입구역 사이 서울광장 지하 13미터에 위치한 이 공간은 한때 폐쇄돼 있었으며, 현재는 ‘K-컬처 스테이션’으로 불린다. 폭 9.5미터, 면적 3,261제곱미터 규모다.
The passage lies between Korea's first underground shopping arcade and the tracks of Subway Line No. 2. It is believed to have been created in the early 1980s when City Hall and Euljiro 1 (il)-ga stations, built at different depths, were connected, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
이 지하 통로는 국내 최초의 지하상가와 지하철 2호선 선로 사이에 자리하고 있다. 서울시에 따르면 서로 다른 깊이에 지어진 시청역과 을지로입구역을 연결하는 과정에서 1980년대 초 조성된 것으로 추정된다.
"We will continue uncovering hidden spaces across Seoul and turning them into places that offer something new with every visit, creating new attractions for both residents and K-culture fans from around the world," Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon said.
오세훈 서울시장은 “앞으로도 서울 곳곳의 숨은 공간을 지속적으로 발굴해 방문할 때마다 새로운 경험을 제공하는 장소로 탈바꿈시키고, 시민과 전 세계 K-컬처 팬들이 찾는 새로운 명소로 만들어가겠다”고 밝혔다.
The inaugural exhibition, "Big Bang 20th Anniversary Media Exhibition: Cosmos," features 11 experiential zones combining media art, virtual reality and interactive installations.
첫 전시인 ‘빅뱅 20주년 미디어 전시: 코스모스’는 미디어 아트와 가상현실, 인터랙티브 설치물을 결합한 11개의 체험 공간으로 구성된다.
The exhibition runs through Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., except Mondays. Tickets are 20,200 won. Online reservations in advance are required.
전시는 9월 27일까지 매주 월요일을 제외하고 오전 10시부터 오후 10시까지 운영된다. 입장권은 2만200원이며 온라인 사전 예약이 필요하다.
The venue will remain open as a permanent cultural platform featuring rotating programs after the Big Bang exhibition ends.
빅뱅 전시가 종료된 이후에도 이 공간은 다양한 프로그램을 선보이는 상설 문화 플랫폼으로 운영될 예정이다.
K-Culture Station is part of the city government's broader initiative to transform neglected underground spaces into recreational and cultural venues for residents and visitors.
K-컬처 스테이션은 활용되지 않던 지하 공간을 시민과 방문객을 위한 여가·문화 공간으로 탈바꿈하려는 서울시 사업의 일환이다.
It follows Runner Station at Yeouinaru Station, which opened in May 2024, as well as a fitness facility at Ttukseom Station and an indoor park golf venue at Meokgol Station.
K-컬처 스테이션은 2024년 5월 문을 연 여의나루역 러너스테이션과 뚝섬역 운동시설, 먹골역 실내 파크골프 시설 등에 이은 공간이다.
The city plans to open 12 more cultural and leisure spaces in subway stations this year, including K-Culture Station, with each venue tailored to characteristics of its location.
서울시는 K-컬처 스테이션을 포함해 올해 지하철역 내 문화·여가 공간 12곳을 추가로 조성할 계획이며, 각 공간은 해당 지역의 특성에 맞게 꾸며질 예정이다.
