The high school student who was injured while trying to save the victim of a knife attack has officially been recognized as a “person wounded or killed for a righteous cause,” according to Welfare Ministry documents released Sunday.

보건복지부가 일요일 공개한 자료에 따르면, 흉기 공격 피해자를 구하려다 다친 고등학생이 공식적으로 ‘의사상자’로 인정받았다.

The 17-year-old student surnamed Go received the designation following a ministry committee review on July 24, according to documents obtained by Democratic Party of Korea Rep. Kwon Chil-seung.

더불어민주당 권칠승 의원이 확보한 자료에 따르면, 고씨 성의 17세 학생은 지난 7월 24일 보건복지부 위원회 심의를 거쳐 해당 지정을 받았다.

During the May 5 attack on the murder victim, Lee Chae-won, Go rushed to her aid after hearing screams in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju.

고씨는 지난 5월 5일 광주 광산구에서 살해 피해자 이채원을 향한 공격이 발생했을 당시 비명을 듣고 피해자를 돕기 위해 달려갔다.

He found the suspect Jang Yoon-gi standing over Lee as she bled.

고씨는 피를 흘리고 있던 이씨 곁에 피의자 장윤기가 서 있는 것을 발견했다.

Jang allegedly told Go to call an ambulance, then stabbed him twice as the student took out his phone.

장씨는 고씨에게 구급차를 부르라고 말한 뒤, 고씨가 휴대전화를 꺼내자 흉기로 두 차례 찌른 것으로 알려졌다.

Go suffered injuries to his neck and hand.

고씨는 목과 손에 부상을 입었다.

He pushed Jang back with his right arm and escaped the scene.

고씨는 오른팔로 장씨를 밀쳐낸 뒤 현장에서 빠져나왔다.

Even as his consciousness grew faint, he called police and emergency services for Lee.

고씨는 의식이 점차 흐려지는 상황에서도 이씨를 위해 경찰과 응급 구조기관에 신고했다.

He was taken to Jeonbuk National University Hospital for emergency surgery.

고씨는 응급수술을 받기 위해 전북대학교병원으로 이송됐다.

He later testified as a witness at Jang’s trial.

이후 고씨는 장씨의 재판에 증인으로 출석해 증언했다.

Jang was also indicted on attempted murder charges related to the stabbing and serious injury of Go.

장씨는 고씨를 흉기로 찌르고 중상을 입힌 혐의와 관련해 기소됐다.

The Gwangsan-gu District Office sought Go's medical records and police records showing that he had attempted to rescue Lee before requesting that the Ministry of Health and Welfare review his eligibility for the designation.

광산구청은 고씨가 이씨를 구하려 했다는 사실을 확인할 수 있는 진료기록과 경찰 기록 등을 확보한 뒤, 보건복지부에 고씨의 의사상자 인정 여부를 심사해 달라고 요청했다.

Under Korean law, a person killed or wounded for a righteous cause refers to someone who suffers bodily injury while voluntarily attempting to rescue another person despite having no legal or occupational duty to do so.

한국 법률상 의사상자는 법률상 또는 직업상 구조 의무가 없는 사람이 자발적으로 다른 사람을 구하려다 신체적 피해를 입은 경우를 말한다.

The ministry committee designated Go as a Grade 9 person wounded for a righteous cause, making him eligible for state support.

보건복지부 위원회는 고씨를 ‘9급 의상자’로 결정했으며, 이에 따라 고씨는 국가 지원을 받을 수 있게 됐다.

He can also apply for an identification card for wounded noble persons, which provides benefits including free admission to certain cultural and public facilities, such as royal palaces, public museums and parks.

고씨는 또 의상자증을 신청할 수 있으며, 의상자증 소지자는 궁궐과 국공립 박물관, 공원 등 일부 문화·공공시설을 무료로 이용할 수 있다.
