Barefaced came first to describe someone whose face isn’t covered, such as a person without a beard or mask. The word later evolved to bald-faced, which is the most common, and then somehow became bold-faced, maybe because of the use of bold-face type. This person has nothing to hide their lie, making it all the more brazen.
