Factory fires pose growing threat in S. Korea

Factory fires in South Korea have claimed 61 lives and injured 851 people over the past five years, with the average annual number of fires exceeding 2,000, according to the National Fire Agency. A recent blaze at a Daejeon auto parts factory left 14 workers dead and 60 injured.
국가소방청에 따르면, 최근 5년간 한국에서 발생한 공장 화재로 61명이 사망하고 851명이 부상을 입었으며, 연평균 화재 발생 건수는 2,000건을 넘는 것으로 나타났다. 최근 대전의 한 자동차 부품 공장에서 발생한 화재에서는 근로자 14명이 숨지고 60명이 다쳤다.
From 2021 to 2025, a total of 10,915 factory fires were reported nationwide. Experts warn that factories, which store large quantities of flammable materials in enclosed structures, can quickly turn into major disasters once a fire breaks out.
2021년부터 2025년까지 전국에서 발생한 공장 화재는 총 1만 915건에 달한다. 전문가들은 가연성 물질을 대량으로 보관하는 밀폐된 구조의 공장은 화재가 발생하면 대형 재난으로 빠르게 이어질 수 있다고 경고한다.
Property damage from factory fires reached 240.9 billion won ($159.3 million) in 2021 and climbed to 391.6 billion won in 2025, totaling 1.8 trillion won over five years, an annual average of 360 billion won.
공장 화재로 인한 재산 피해는 2021년 2,409억 원(약 1억 5,930만 달러)에서 2025년 3,916억 원으로 증가했으며, 5년간 총 피해 규모는 1조 8,000억 원에 이른다. 연평균 피해액은 약 3,600억 원 수준이다.
By industry, metal products and machinery factories recorded the most fires (3,342), followed by food processing (2,823) and chemical factories (679). Electrical malfunctions caused 39.6 percent of the fires, while workers' negligence accounted for 25.9 percent and mechanical failures for 23.3 percent.
업종별로는 금속 제품 및 기계 공장에서 가장 많은 화재(3,342건)가 발생했으며, 식품 가공 공장(2,823건), 화학 공장(679건)이 뒤를 이었다. 화재 원인으로는 전기적 요인이 39.6%로 가장 많았고, 작업자 부주의가 25.9%, 기계적 결함이 23.3%를 차지했다.
