동계올림픽 첫 정식 종목 ‘스키 마운티니어링’
The 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, the 25th edition of the Winter Games, features eight sports and 16 disciplines, with 116 gold medals up for grabs, including the Olympic debut of ski mountaineering.
제25회 동계올림픽인 2026 밀라노·코르티나 동계올림픽에서는 총 8개 종목, 16개 세부 종목에서 116개의 금메달이 걸린 가운데, 스키 마운티니어링이 처음으로 올림픽 정식 종목에 포함됐다.
Long practiced in the Alps, the sport was approved by the International Olympic Committee in 2019 upon lobbying by the International Ski Mountaineering Federation, which emphasized its growing global participation, sustainability and natural fit with the host region’s alpine terrain.
알프스 지역에서 오랫동안 시행돼 온 이 종목은 국제스키마운티니어링연맹(ISMF)의 지속적인 요청에 따라 2019년 국제올림픽위원회(IOC)의 승인을 받았다. 연맹은 해당 종목이 전 세계적으로 참여 인구가 늘고 있으며, 지속 가능성과 개최지인 알프스 지형과의 높은 적합성을 갖췄다는 점을 강조해왔다.
Ski mountaineering combines endurance, speed and technical skill, as athletes ascend and descend snow-covered mountains using lightweight skis and specialized equipment. Courses require repeated transitions between climbing and skiing, and on steep or technical sections, competitors carry skis on their backs while climbing on foot before resuming skiing, testing both stamina and strategy.
스키 마운티니어링은 선수들이 경량 스키와 특수 장비를 착용하고 눈 덮인 산을 오르내리는 경기로, 지구력과 속도, 기술을 모두 요구한다. 코스에서는 오르막과 내리막을 반복하며, 급경사나 기술이 필요한 구간에서는 스키를 등에 메고 도보로 등반한 뒤 다시 스키를 타고 하강해야 한다. 이에 따라 체력은 물론 전략적 판단 능력까지 종합적으로 시험받는 종목으로 평가된다.
