Art auctions rebound in 2025, led by Chagall
2025년 미술 경매 시장 반등…샤갈이 주도
According to the Korea Art Price Appraisal Association and Artprice, the domestic art auction market’s transactions last year totaled around 140.5 billion won ($95.3 million), a 25.4 billion won increase from the previous year. Annual transaction values had steadily declined from 329.4 billion won in 2021 but rebounded for the first time in 2025.
지난해 국내 미술 경매 시장 거래 규모가 증가하며 2025년 들어 처음으로 반등에 성공한 것으로 나타났다.
한국미술품감정협회(KAPAA)와 아트프라이스에 따르면, 지난해 국내 미술 경매 시장의 총 거래액은 약 1,405억 원(9,530만 달러)으로 집계됐다. 이는 전년보다 254억 원 증가한 수치다. 연간 거래액은 2021년 3,294억 원을 기록한 이후 지속적인 감소세를 보여왔으나, 2025년에 들어 처음으로 반등했다.
In total, 18,339 works of art were exhibited at auction, with 9,797 sold, resulting in a 53.42 percent successful bid rate, the highest in three years. Two years ago, the rate was 46.4 percent.
지난해 경매에 출품된 미술 작품은 총 1만8,339점으로, 이 가운데 9,797점이 낙찰돼 낙찰률은 53.42%를 기록했다. 이는 2년 전의 46.4%보다 크게 상승한 수치이자 최근 3년간 최고치다.
KAPAA appraisal committee head Kim Yeong-seok said the market’s growth in 2025 was driven by the late artist Marc Chagall, whose total sales exceeded 16.7 billion won, the highest among all artists. Chagall also claimed the highest single-artwork prices in November at Seoul Auction’s major sale, with works sold for 9.4 billion won and 5.9 billion won, taking both first and second place in a single auction.
한국미술품감정협회 감정위원회 위원장 김영석은 2025년 미술 시장 성장의 핵심 요인으로 고(故) 마르크 샤갈을 꼽았다. 샤갈의 지난해 총 판매액은 167억 원을 넘어 전체 작가 가운데 가장 높은 수준을 기록했다. 특히 지난해 11월 서울옥션의 주요 경매에서는 샤갈의 작품이 각각 94억 원과 59억 원에 낙찰되며 단일 경매에서 1·2위를 모두 차지했다.
Kim noted that while the market rebounded, sales remain concentrated among “blue-chip” artists, emphasizing the need to discover new talent.
김 위원장은 시장이 회복세를 보이고는 있으나 거래가 여전히 이른바 ‘블루칩’ 작가에 집중되고 있다며, 향후 미술 시장의 지속적인 성장을 위해서는 새로운 작가 발굴이 필요하다고 지적했다.
