[THE INVESTOR] Iljin Electric signed a memorandum of understanding with Siemens to jointly develop an environmentally friendly gas-insulated switchgear at a Council on Large Electric Systems 2016 session in Paris, it announced Aug. 25.

The South Korean company and its German partner will develop a 170-kilovolt gas-insulated switchgear to use vacuum interrupter and dry air technologies, a first in the world. The switchgear is a key component that controls power transmission and protects power systems by interrupting overload fault currents.

Siemens, one of the world’s largest producers of energy-efficient, resource-saving technologies, is looking to enter South Korea, according to the industry. To supply the gas-insulated switchgear to KEPCO, owning a plant in the country is mandatory.
