English Learning Across Borders: A Japanese Teacher’s Awakening in Seoul
Dear readers of The Korea Herald, and to Professor Kim Daekyun—warm greetings from Japan. My name is Mari Yoshizawa, CEO of Pep Inc., an English school in Hiratsuka. Every day I teach learners from playful kindergarteners to motivated professionals, and it is an honor to share my reflections here under Professor Kim’s series.
The Silence of Japanese Classrooms
In Japan, classrooms are often quiet—not because students lack ideas, but because they fear mistakes. Unless they feel certain, they hesitate to speak.
When I ask, “What’s up?”, the reply I hear most is, “Nothing special.” And there the conversation ends. The moment to connect disappears, and I feel the weight of a culture that prizes correctness over communication.
My Culture Shock in Seoul
That is why my first visit to a Seoul English school over ten years ago was unforgettable. Children spoke loudly and joyfully, raising their hands without hesitation. They read books far beyond the level of Japanese students their age, and their confidence filled the classroom with energy.
What struck me even more was the time they devoted: in Japan, one lesson a week is common; in Korea, children study several times a week for hours. Until then, I had taken pride in my students’ progress. But in Seoul, that pride collapsed. I realized I was a frog in a well, unaware of the ocean beyond. Embarrassment gave way to urgency: if nothing changes, the gap will only grow wider.
A Fire Rekindled
Later I saw IIBC data showing Korea’s average TOEIC score more than 100 points higher than Japan’s. After Seoul, this was no surprise. From an early age, Korean learners view English not as a subject, but as a tool for life. That mindset—supported by families, schools, and society—translates into both strong skills and exam success.
Each time I recall that trip, a fire rekindles in my heart. Not envy, but determination: Japan must not stop here.
A Shared Hope Across the Sea
English is not a gift for the talented—it is a language. With encouragement and guidance, every learner can grow. Professor Kim, I often hear you speak words of courage to listeners, and I strive to carry the same spirit into my classrooms.
My dream is that on my next visit I can say:
“Professor Kim, look—Japanese children’s English has transformed.”
To Korean learners, I extend my deepest respect. Your passion reaches across the sea, reminding teachers like me that language builds not only skill, but courage, hope, and bridges between nations.

일본 교실은 종종 조용합니다. 학생들에게 아이디어가 없어서가 아니라 실수를 두려워하기 때문입니다. 확신이 서지 않으면 발언을 주저합니다. 제가 “What’s up?”이라고 물으면 대부분 “Nothing special.”이라고 답합니다. 그리고 대화는 거기서 끝납니다. 연결될 순간은 사라지고, 정확성을 소통보다 더 중시하는 문화의 무게를 느끼게 됩니다.
서울에서의 문화 충격
그래서 십여 년 전 처음 서울의 영어학원을 방문했을 때의 경험은 잊을 수 없습니다. 아이들이 큰 소리로 즐겁게 말하며 주저 없이 손을 들었습니다. 또래 일본 학생들보다 훨씬 수준 높은 책을 읽으며, 자신감으로 교실을 가득 채웠습니다. 더 놀라운 것은 학습에 투자하는 시간이었습니다. 일본에서는 주 1회 수업이 흔하지만, 한국에서는 아이들이 주 수차례, 몇 시간씩 공부합니다. 그 전까지 저는 제 학생들의 성취에 자부심을 느꼈습니다. 그러나 서울에서는 그 자부심이 무너졌습니다. 우물 안 개구리였던 저는 바다의 존재를 몰랐던 것이죠. 당혹감은 곧 위기의식으로 바뀌었습니다. 변화하지 않으면 격차는 더 벌어질 뿐이라는 것을 깨달았습니다.
다시 타오른 불꽃
이후 IIBC 자료에서 한국의 평균 TOEIC 점수가 일본보다 100점 이상 높다는 사실을 보았습니다. 서울에서 본光景을 떠올리면 놀랍지 않았습니다. 한국 학습자들은 어린 시절부터 영어를 단순한 과목이 아니라 삶의 도구로 인식합니다. 가족, 학교, 사회의 지원 속에서 이러한 사고방식이 실력과 시험 성과로 이어집니다. 그 여행을 떠올릴 때마다 제 가슴에는 불꽃이 다시 타오릅니다. 그것은 부러움이 아니라 결심입니다. 일본은 여기서 멈추어서는 안 됩니다.
바다를 건너는 희망
영어는 재능 있는 사람만을 위한 선물이 아니라 단순한 언어입니다. 격려와 올바른 지도만 있으면 누구든 성장할 수 있습니다. 김 교수님께서 자주 용기를 북돋는 말씀을 전하시듯, 저도 제 교실에서 같은 정신을 전하려 노력합니다.
제 꿈은 다음번 방문 때 이렇게 말하는 것입니다.
“김 교수님, 보세요—일본 아이들의 영어가 달라졌습니다.”
한국 학습자 여러분께 깊은 존경을 보냅니다. 여러분의 열정은 바다를 넘어 우리 같은 교사들에게 전달되며, 언어가 단순한 기술을 넘어 용기와 희망, 그리고 나라와 나라를 잇는 다리가 됨을 다시금 일깨워줍니다.
