이번 회에는 저희 책 Advanced Vocab에서 소개한 중상급 영단어들을 알려드립니다. 단어의 우리말 뜻을 기억하는 데에 그치지 않고, 난이도 있는 단어를 실제로 활용하는 단계까지 나아가 보기 바랍니다.
<권력의 행사>
1. ratify [rǽtəfài] 비준하다
ratio와 어원이 같다. ‘계산하다’라는 뜻에서 유래했으며, 조약을 비준한다는 의미를 지닌다.
The Korea-US FTA has not been ratified by the US Congress while trade agreements with the EU have gone forward as planned.
EU와의 무역협정은 계획대로 진행되는 반면 한미 FTA는 미 의회에 의해 아직 비준되지 않았다.
● 대통령은 상원이 러시아와 무기 감축 조약을 올해까지 비준했으면 좋겠다고 말했다.
The President said he hoped the Senate would ratify an arms reduction treaty with Russia by the end of this year.
2. ration [rǽʃən] 배급
‘비율’이라는 뜻의 ratio와 어원이 같다. ‘배급하다’ 혹은 ‘배급량’이라는 뜻으로 쓰인다. 배급은 rationing이라고 한다.
Due to the food shortage, the third world country was forced to ration its food supplies.
식량 부족으로 그 제3세계 국가는 식량을 배급해야만 했다.
● 전쟁 기간 중에 식량 배급제가 시행되었다.
Food rationing went into effect during the wartime periods.
3. reclaim [rìːkléim] 되찾다
말 그대로 ‘다시 요구하다’가 기본 뜻이고, 잃어버린 것이나 잃어버린 자리를 되찾는다는 의미를 지닌다. 개발이 안 된 땅이나 잃었던 땅을 되찾는다는 의미로 확대되어, ‘간척사업’을 표현할 때도 쓴다. ‘간척지’는 reclaimed land라고 한다.
After a decade out of the public spotlight, the singer went on to reclaim her spot atop the music charts.
그 가수는 10년간 대중의 관심에서 멀어져 있다가 음악 순위에서 정상의 자리를 되찾았다.
● 새만금 간척지는 서해안의 지도를 바꿔 놓았다.
The reclaimed land of Saemangeum changed the map of Korea’s west coast.
4. rectify [réktəfài] 바로잡다
직사각형을 rectangle(right angle)이라고 하는데, 이때 rect-는 right를 의미한다. 어원이 같은 단어 rectify는 ‘바로잡다’라는 뜻을 지닌다.
The Internet had been down for hours, and our IT specialist assured me she was taking steps to rectify the situation.
인터넷이 몇 시간 째 다운되었고 IT 전문가는 상황을 바로잡기 위한 조치를 취하고 있다고 내게 확인해주었다.

5. redress [rìːdrés] 바로잡다
re(again)+dress(address의 -dress로 ‘바로잡다’의 뜻)로 구성된 단어다. 잘못을 바로잡거나 균형을 바로잡는 것을 뜻한다.
A politician's role is to try to redress the public's grievances, not to ignore or aggravate existing problems.
정치인의 역할은 대중의 불만을 해결하려고 노력하는 것이지 기존의 문제를 무시하거나 악화하는 것이 아니다.
● 학장은 교수진에 이념적인 불균형이 있다면 바로잡아야 한다고 생각했다.
The dean thought that the ideological imbalance of the faculty, if any, should be redressed.
6. reinstate [rìːinstéit] 복귀, 복권시키다
re+in+state, 즉 ‘정상적인 상태(state)로 다시 되돌리다’가 기본 뜻이다. 취소된 자격이나 직책을 다시 복귀시킨다는 의미를 지닌다.
In order to have your suspended license reinstated, you must carefully follow the procedure set forth by the judge.
정지된 면허를 다시 복귀시키려면 판사가 정한 절차를 충실히 따라야 한다.
● 정부는 밤 10시 이후 학원 교습 금지를 재도입할 것을 고려하고 있다.
The government is considering reinstating the ban on classes after 10 PM in private institutes.
7. relegate [réləɡèit] 좌천시키다
re(back)+legate(delegate의 -legate와 같은 어원으로 send라는 뜻)로 구성된 단어다. ‘더 낮은 위치로 보내다’라는 의미에서 유래하여, ‘좌천시키다’, ‘더 나쁜 직위를 갖다’라는 뜻을 지닌다.
After striking out six times in Monday night's game, the high-paid rookie was relegated to the bench for the start of Tuesday's game.
월요일 야간 경기에서 여섯 번이나 삼진 아웃을 당한 후에 그 고액 연봉의 신인 선수는 화요일 경기 선발에서는 벤치 신세가 되어야 했다.
● 내가 가장 좋아하는 야구 선수가 마이너리그로 강등되었다.
My favorite baseball player was relegated to the minor leagues.
8. repatriate [rìːpéitrièit] 본국으로 송환하다
re(back)+patriate(patriot과 같은 어원으로 ‘국가’라는 의미)로 이뤄진 단어다. ‘본국으로 송환한다’는 의미이며, 사람뿐 아니라 해외로 나갔던 투자 자금이 다시 본국으로 돌아가는 것을 표현할 때도 쓴다.
The current pace of US dollar repatriation will continue as investors sell assets in emerging markets.
투자자들이 이머징마켓에 투자한 자산을 팔고 있기 때문에 달러가 미국으로 돌아가는 현재의 흐름은 계속 이어질 것이다.
● 한국은 해안 분계선 남쪽으로 표류해 내려온 북한 어부들을 송환했다.
South Korea repatriated North Korean fishermen who accidentally drifted south of the sea border.
