A veteran firefighter out to bowl with friends used his expertise to helped extinguish a fire that broke out in the alley, fire authorities in Incheon said Sunday.
According to the Incheon Fire Service, Cpt. Ji Su-ryong of the Mansu 119 Safety Center was at a bowling alley in Michuhol-gu, Incheon, on Saturday when a fire broke out at around 3:40 p.m. He spotted smoke coming out of the equipment room and instructed others to dial the 119 emergency service.
He found a fire hose inside the building to try and combat the fire. The flames were completely extinguished by firefighters who arrived on the scene some 30 minutes later. No injuries were reported from the incident.
Incheon fire authorities said Ji's quick response helped contain the incident to minimal damage. They noted that a major incident may have occurred if not for him, especially as the bowling alley had been busy with visitors at the time.
Ji is a 30-year veteran firefighter who joined the emergency service in 1995.
"I express sincere gratitude to Cpt. Ji for his active response with no regards for his own safety, despite being on his off-day. I advise people to be mindful of how to use the fire extinguisher and fire hydrants in case of emergencies," said Na Gi-seong, chief of the Incheon Namdong Fire Station that has jurisdiction in Michuhol-gu.
