State museum to celebrate family month with inaugural drawing contest

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea presents its first drawing contest celebrating the month of May, Korea's family month.

The drawing contest will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 3 at MMCA Gwacheon in Gyeonggi Province. A total of 500 contenders will be invited to the museum’s sculpture park and given two drawing themes, to discover the museum's best parts and hidden scenes.

Up to 400 participants may register in advance via the museum’s website starting Friday, with another 100 accepted on-site on the competition day. Participants will receive drawing kits, pizza for lunch, and may bring pets at the sculpture park, according to the museum.

All the drawings created at the competition will be exhibited at the MMCA Gwacheon rotunda on the second floor.

May is known as family month here as it contains three special days: Children's Day on May 5, designated as a national holiday, Parents' Day on May 8 and Teachers' Day on May 15.

MMCA Gwacheon, located at Seoul Grand Park, also runs the Children Museum of Art on the first floor, offering a variety of activities for kids.

The museum recently opened the exhibition “Young Korean Artists 2025: Here and Now” and “MMCA Collection: Korean Modern and Contemporary Art I,” which highlights Korean masterpieces from the 1900s to 1960s, opens Thursday.
