South Korea on Wednesday marked the 11th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster, with memorial events held nationwide to honor the 304 lives lost in the country’s worst maritime tragedy.

On April 16, 2014, the passenger ferry, which was carrying 476 people, most of them high school students on a field trip to the southern island of Jeju, sank off Jindo, South Jeolla Province. The tragedy sparked a wave of grief and outrage, leading to changes in safety regulations and growing calls for greater government accountability.
