이번 회에는 저희 책 Advanced Vocab에서 소개한 중상급 영단어들을 알려드립니다. 단어의 우리말 뜻을 기억하는 데에 그치지 않고, 난이도 있는 단어를 실제로 활용하는 단계까지 나아가 보기 바랍니다.
<권력의 행사>
1. auspices [ɔ́ːspisis] 후원
under the auspices of의 형태로 쓰여 ‘~의 후원 하에’, ‘~의 보호 하에’라는 뜻을 표현한다.
The relief efforts in the war-torn country were under the auspices of several humanitarian groups.
전쟁으로 피폐해진 국가에서의 구원 활동은 다양한 인도주의 단체의 후원 하에 이루어졌다.
● 장애인의 권리에 관한 총회가 유엔의 후원 하에 열릴 예정이다.
A convention on the rights of persons with disabilities will be held under the auspices of the United Nations.
2. castrate [kǽstreit] 거세하다
‘거세하다’라는 뜻을 지닌 동사다. 비유적으로 권력이나 권한을 빼앗아 무기력하게 만든다는 의미로도 쓴다.
In the past, there was a practice of castrating young boys to maintain their high-pitched singing voices.
과거에는 노래할 때 고음을 유지하도록 하기 위해 어린아이들을 거세하는 관습이 있었다.
● 아동 성범죄자의 거세 문제에 찬반이 분분하나, 많은 사람들이 남성호르몬과 성욕을 감소시키는 화학적 거세에는 찬성한다.
Castrating pedophiles remains controversial, but many people support chemical castration that reduces testosterone and sex drive.
3. clampdown [klǽmpdàun] 단속
‘단속’의 영어 표현을 사전에서 찾으면 crackdown과 clampdown 모두 나오는데, crackdown은 ‘탄압’이라는 강한 의미도 지니므로 단순히 ‘단속’만을 의미한다면 clampdown이라고 표현하는 것이 좋다.
The traffic police announced that they were planning a clampdown on drinking and driving this holiday weekend.
교통경찰은 이번 주말 연휴에 음주 운전 단속을 계획하고 있다고 발표했다.
● 금융감독 당국은 내부자 거래를 단속하고 있다.
Financial regulators are clamping down on insider trading.
4. clout [kláut] 영향력, 지배
‘손으로 때리다’라는 뜻에서 유래한 단어이며, ‘영향력’이라는 의미로 쓰인다. 예를 들어 political clout은 ‘정치적 영향력’을 뜻한다.
Labor unions have increased their clout in recent decades, resulting in greater leverage during negotiations with management.
노동조합은 최근 수십 년 간 영향력이 커져서 경영진과 교섭 시에 예전보다 큰 협상 수단을 갖게 되었다.
● 남북관계가 악화되면서 중국의 북한에 대한 영향력을 우려하는 사람이 많다.
As inter-Korean relations turn sour, many people worry about China’s clout with the dictatorship.
5. condone [kəndóun] 용납하다
con(강조)+done(donation과 같은 어원으로 give의 뜻)으로 구성된 단어다. ‘포기하다’, ‘용서하다’라는 의미에서 유래하여 ‘잘못된 것을 용납하다’, ‘묵인하다’라는 뜻이 되었다.
The ambassador felt compelled to comment on the nuclear tests for fear that her silence would be misinterpreted as condoning North Korea's actions.
아무 언급도 하지 않으면 북한의 행동에 대해 묵인하는 것처럼 오해받을 우려가 있어, 대사는 북한의 핵 실험에 대해 언급해야겠다고 느꼈다.
● 그의 추방으로 정부는 어떤 불법 이민도 용납하지 않겠다는 것을 분명히 했다.
His deportation was a manifestation of the government’s will not to condone illegal immigration.
6. deport [dipɔ́ːrt] 추방하다
de(away)+port(porter와 같은 어원으로 carry의 뜻)으로 구성된 단어다. 멀리 보내다(carry away)라는 뜻에서 유래하여, 자국민이 아닌 사람을 다른 나라로 쫓아낸다는 의미를 지닌다. .
The American reporter was deported back to the States when it was revealed that he had knowingly violated several privacy laws.
그 미국 기자는 의도적으로 몇 가지 사생활 관련법을 위반한 것이 드러나자 본국으로 추방되었다.
● 정부는 폭탄테러 계획에 연루된 혐의를 받고 있는 2명의 알카에다 용의자를 추방하기로 결정했다.
The government has decided to deport two al-Qaeda suspects allegedly involved in a bomb plot.
7. emancipate [imǽnsəpèit] 해방시키다
e(ex, away)+man(hand, manual)+cipate(participate의 -cipate와 같은 어원으로 take라는 뜻)로 구성된 단어다. ‘손으로 잡고 있는 상태에서 벗어나다’라는 의미에서 유래하여 ‘해방시키다’라는 뜻을 지닌다. 특히 미국의 노예해방을 표현할 때 쓰는 단어다.
The 16-year-old girl filed a claim with the court to be legally emancipated from her parents.
그 16세 소녀는 법적으로 부모에게서 해방되기 위한 요구를 법원에 제출했다.
● 링컨의 노예 해방 선언은 400만의 노예를 해방시켰다.
Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freed four million slaves.
