이번 회에는 저희 책 Advanced Vocab에서 소개한 중상급 영단어들을 알려드립니다. 단어의 우리말 뜻을 기억하는 데에 그치지 않고, 난이도 있는 단어를 실제로 활용하는 단계까지 나아가 보기 바랍니다.
<소통, 교감>
1. reciprocate [risíprəkèit] 화답하다
상대방이 내게 해준 만큼 나도 해준다는 뜻을 지닌 동사가 reciprocate이다. ‘상호 간의’, ‘호혜의’라는 뜻을 지닌 형용사는 reciprocal이며 ‘상호주의 원칙’은 reciprocity라고 한다.
We had the McBeans over for brunch, and three weeks later, they kindly reciprocated with an invitation to the opera.
우리는 맥빈 부부를 브런치에 초대했고 그들은 친절하게도 3주 뒤에 우리를 오페라에 초대하는 것으로 보답했다.
● 밸런타인데이에 여자 친구로부터 멋진 선물을 받아서 나는 3월 화이트데이에 똑같이 근사한 선물로 보답해야겠다고 생각했다.
Having received an amazing Valentine’s Day gift from my girlfriend, I knew I had to reciprocate with an equally amazing White Day gift in March.
2. vicarious [vaikέəriəs] 대리의
‘대리만족’을 영어로 표현할 때 유용한 단어가 vicarious이다. 굳이 ‘만족’을 satisfaction으로 표현할 필요는 없으며 아래 예문처럼 vicarious(ly)만 잘 활용하면 된다. ‘목사’라는 뜻을 지닌 vicar도vicarious와 어원이 같은데, ‘신을 대신한다’는 뜻에서 유래했다.
Parents sometimes try to live vicariously through the accomplishments of their children.
부모는 때론 아이들의 성취를 통해 대리만족을 느끼며 살고자 한다.
● 스탠드에서 경기를 바라보면서 그는 아들이 친 공이 우측 담장을 넘기자 짜릿한 대리만족을 느꼈다.
Watching from the stands, he felt a vicarious thrill when his son hit the ball over the right field fence.
3. visceral [vísərəl] 본능적인
‘내장’을 뜻하는 viscera의 형용사형이며, ‘생각’이 아니라 ‘본능’에 의해 솟구치는 감정을 표현할 때 쓴다. 역시 ‘내장’을 뜻하는 gut을 써서 gut feeling이라고 하면 ‘육감’이나 ‘본능적인 느낌’을 의미한다.
Although Morton considered himself a jaded intellectual, he had a very visceral reaction to the exhibit, and tears immediately sprung to his eyes.
모텐은 스스로를 닳고 닳은 지식인이라 생각했지만 전시물을 보자 자신도 어쩔 수 없이 순간적으로 눈물이 솟구쳤다.
● 그의 노래가 본능적으로 호소하는 이유는 한국적인 정서를 잘 표현하기 때문이다.
A large part of the visceral appeal of his song is his artful expression of the Korean sentiment.
4. wavelength [wéivlèŋkθ] 파장, 텔레파시
wavelength는 ‘파장’이라는 뜻이다. 흔히 서로 생각이 같을 때 ‘텔레파시가 통한다’고 하는데 실제 telepathy는 그런 의미로는 쓰이지 않으며, be on the same wavelength가 맞는 표현이다.
Jack and Jill seemed to be on the same wavelength most of the time, and they figured maybe they were meant for each other.
잭과 질은 거의 항상 텔레파시가 통해서 서로 천생연분이라 생각했다.
● 인터넷을 검색하다 보면 나랑 같은 생각을 하는 사람이 이렇게 많은가 싶어 놀랄 때가 있다.
Surfing the web, I am surprised sometimes to see that there are so many people who are on the same wavelength as me.
<권력의 행사>
1. adjourn [ədʒə́ːrn] 중단하다, 연기하다
ad(to)+journ(day라는 뜻의 jour와 같은 어원)으로 구성된 단어다. ‘다른 날로 옮긴다’는 의미에서 유래하여, 진행하는 일을 중단하고 나머지를 다른 날로 옮긴다는 뜻으로 확대되었다. postpone이나 delay가 지닌 ‘시작하지도 않고 연기한다’는 의미와는 다르다.
After the meetings had been adjourned for the day, I went back to my hotel room and enjoyed a peaceful evening.
그날의 회의는 끝이 나서 나는 호텔 방으로 돌아와서 여유로운 저녁 시간을 보냈다.
● 의원들은 법안을 통과시키고 정회를 선포했다.
Lawmakers adjourned the session after passing the bill.
2. amnesty [ǽmnəsti] 사면
‘앰네스티 인터내셔널’이라는 단체명을 통해서도 잘 알려진 단어로, ‘사면’을 뜻한다. ‘용서하다’라는 뜻을 지닌 pardon도 ‘사면’을 뜻하므로, 예를 들어 ‘대통령은 광복절을 맞아 1000명을 사면했다’는 다음과 같이 말할 수 있다. The President pardoned one thousand prisoners on National Independence Day.
Illegal immigrants are granted amnesty if it is determined that deporting them back to their native country would be a de facto death sentence.
불법 이민자들은 본국 추방이 사실상 사형을 의미하는 것이 확실하면 사면을 받게 된다.
● 태국 정부는 반정부 시위 주도자들에 대한 사면을 논의할 준비가 되어 있다.
The Thai government is ready to discuss giving amnesty to anti-government protest leaders.
