Male investors in their 30s and 40s account for nearly 40 percent of cryptocurrency investors here, recent data pooled by a local lawmaker showed Sunday. But female investors in their 50s also account for a significant share of high-net-worth individuals in the crypto market.

According to data provided by Rep. Cha Gyu-geun of the Rebuilding Korea Party, 15.16 million investors whose age and gender could be verified were registered on five major crypto exchanges here -- Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit and Gopax. The figure includes an overlap of investors who are registered on multiple exchanges.

Some 9.82 million investors were registered on Upbit, followed by 3.2 million on Coinone, 2.36 million on Bithumb, 770,000 on Korbit and 150,000 on Gopax. Bithumb saw a surge in the number of accounts, rising to 2.36 million as of March 18, an on-year increase of 77.4 percent following an aggressive marketing push.

By age, 4.51 million were in their 30s, followed by 3.97 million in their 40s, 2.92 million in their 20s or younger, 2.64 million in their 50s, and 1.12 million in their 60s or older.

By gender, male investors in their 30s and 40s amounted to 3.1 million and 2.67 million respectively, accounting for 38.1 percent of the total crypto investor population.

While 12.6 million, or 83.1 percent of the total, owned crypto assets worth less than 1 million won ($680), 1.57 million had crypto assets between 1 million won and 10 million won. Those with crypto assets between 10 million won and 100 million won amounted to 830,000, and 160,000 had assets over 100 million won.

Thirty-six-thousand male investors in their 40s owned crypto assets over 100 million won, followed by 35,000 males in their 50s.

Though only 14,000 female investors in their 40s had crypto assets over 100 million won, more than 20,000 female investors in their 50s had accumulated assets of that size, reflecting a strong interest in crypto as an investment vehicle.
