이번 회에는 저희 책 Advanced Vocab에서 소개한 중상급 영단어들을 알려드립니다. 단어의 우리말 뜻을 기억하는 데에 그치지 않고, 난이도 있는 단어를 실제로 활용하는 단계까지 나아가 보기 바랍니다.

1. camaraderie [kæ̀mərɑ́ːdəri] 동지애
사진기 camera, 단원제(양원제)를 뜻하는 unicameral(bicameral)의 -camera는 모두 chamber(방)를 의미한다. ‘동지’라는 뜻의 comrade도 원래 ‘방을 같이 쓰는 사람’이라는 말에서 유래했다. 역시 comrade와 같은 어원인 cameraderie는 ‘동지애’, ‘동료애’라는 뜻을 지닌다.
Michael would always miss the great camaraderie that existed at the firm, where he’d made so many wonderful friends over the years.
마이클은 수년간 많은 좋은 친구들을 사귀었던 그 회사의 뜨거운 동료애를 항상 그리워할 것 같았다.
● 내가 뛰었던 대학 미식 축구팀의 협동정신과 동료애는 훌륭했다.
The team spirit and camaraderie of my college football team was great.
2. coalesce [kòuəlés] 합하다, 합동하다
co(together)+alesce(‘사춘기’를 뜻하는 adolescence의 -olescence와 같은 어원으로 grow라는 뜻)으로 구성된 단어다. ‘같이 커지다’라는 의미에서 유래하여, ‘합쳐서 더 큰 것이 되다’, ‘합동하다’라는 뜻을 지닌다.
The conference was attended by a diverse set of groups who had coalesced around their shared desire to solve the problem of the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa.
아프리카의 에이즈 확산 문제를 해결하자는 공동의 희망을 중심으로 모인 다양한 그룹이 그 회의에 참석했다.
● 국무총리는 다양한 시민단체가 환경 보호라는 명분 하에 힘을 합할 것을 촉구했다.
The Prime Minister urged the various civic groups to coalesce around the worthy cause of environmental protection.
3. collaborate [kəlǽbərèit] 협력하다
col(com, together)+laborate(labor와 같은 어원)으로 구성된 단어다. ‘같이 일하다’라는 뜻에서 유래하여, ‘협력하다’라는 의미가 되었다.
The new treatment for leukemia came as a result of an excellent collaboration between both private and public institutions.
새로운 백혈병 치료법은 민간과 공공 기관간의 뛰어난 협력의 결과로 개발되었다.
● 그 기업은 웹 기반의 공동작업 툴을 개발하고 있다.
The company is developing web-based collaboration tools.
4. convene [kənvíːn] 모이다, 회의를 소집하다
con(together)+vene(‘장소’를 뜻하는 venue와 같은 어원으로 come의 의미)로 구성된 단어다. ‘같이 모이다’라는 뜻에서 유래하여, 주주총회 같은 회의를 소집한다는 뜻을 지닌다. 명사 convention은‘모임’, ‘전당대회’를 일컫는데, 그런 모임에서 정하는 ‘약속’, ‘규범’, ‘관습’을 의미하기도 한다. 형용사형 conventional은 ‘관습적인’, ‘뻔한’이라는 뜻으로 쓰인다.
The company convened a general shareholders meeting to vote on the proposals and approve the contemplated transaction.
그 기업은 결의사항 및 심사 중인 거래에 대해 투표하기 위해 주주총회를 소집했다.
● 대통령은 북한의 핵실험 문제를 논의하기 위한 국가안전보장회의를 소집했다.
The President convened a National Security Council meeting to discuss North Korea’s nuclear test.
5. haggle [hǽɡl] 협상하다, 흥정하다
어떤 사안이나 특히 가격을 두고 협상을 벌인다는 뜻이다.
Senators on Capitol Hill continue to haggle over federal financial reform.
상원의원들이 연방정부의 금융개혁안을 놓고 의회에서 계속 협상을 벌이고 있다.
● 가격 흥정은 특히 재래시장에서 한국 쇼핑 문화의 일부이다.
Haggling over prices is a part of Korea’s shopping culture, especially in traditional markets.
6. impersonate [impə́ːrsənèit] 흉내 내다
im(in)+person+ate로 구성되며, 원래 뜻은 ‘어떤 사람의 모습이 되다’이다. 어떤 사람을 사칭하거나 유명인을 흉내 낸다는 뜻을 지닌다. 참고로 do someone’s impression도 유명인을 흉내 내거나 성대모사하는 것을 말한다.
Because the comedian became famous for his George W. Bush impersonation, he was particularly saddened by the end of the Bush administration.
그 코미디언은 조지 부시를 흉내 내는 것으로 유명해져서 부시 정부가 끝나자 특히 슬퍼졌다.
● 25세의 남성이 경찰을 사칭한 혐의로 구속되었다.
A 25-year-old man was arrested for impersonating a police officer.
7. inculcate [inkʌ́lkeit] 심어주다
in+culcate(‘밟아서 발자국을 남긴다’는 의미)로 구성된 단어다. 어떤 가치관을 머릿속에 심어 준다는 뜻이다.
One of the best ways to inculcate strong and expansive moral values in our young people is to lead by positive example.
젊은이들에게 강하고 폭넓은 도덕적 가치관을 심어주는 가장 좋은 방법 중 하나는 좋은 본보기를 보이는 것이다.
● 젊은이들에게 가족의 소중함을 일깨워 줘야 한다.
We need to inculcate in our youth the importance of family.
