Prosecutors on Thursday sought a 1-year prison sentence for the daughter of former President Moon Jae-in on charges of driving under the influence and illegally renting out her properties for short-term accommodation.
In the first hearing for Moon Da-hye’s trial at the Seoul Western District Court, prosecutors insisted the court hand down a 1-year sentence, citing the severity of the crimes. Prosecutors pointed out her “high” blood alcohol concentration, which was measured at 0.14 percent at the time, and the “hefty” profits she gained from operating multiple illegal short-term accommodation businesses.
Moon, before attending the Wednesday hearing, told the press that she deeply regretted her actions and offered an apology to the victims. She also requested leniency in court.
Last month, the Seoul Western District Prosecutor's Office indicted Moon Da-hye without detention on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act and the Public Health Control Act.
The 42-year-old was referred to the prosecution in November 2024 for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in October when her car collided with a taxi as she was changing lanes in Yongsan District, Seoul. She was referred to the prosecution the same month on suspicions of operating several illegal short-term accommodation businesses at her properties without any official registration.
