이번 회에는 저희 책 Advanced Vocab에서 소개한 중상급 영단어들을 알려드립니다. 단어의 우리말 뜻을 기억하는 데에 그치지 않고, 난이도 있는 단어를 실제로 활용하는 단계까지 나아가 보기 바랍니다.
<강조, 선전>
1. reiterate [riːítərèit] 강조하다
re(again)+iterate(repeat의 의미)로 구성된 단어다. 여러 차례 반복하며 강조한다는 뜻이다.
During the conference call, the CEO reiterated several times that the upcoming quarter will be extremely critical for the company's business.
실적 발표를 위한 콘퍼런스 콜에서 대표이사는 다음 분기가 사업상 매우 중요하다고 수차례나 강조했다.
● 선생님은 교실에서 욕설을 써서는 안 된다고 누차 강조했다.
The teacher reiterated several times that profanity would not be tolerated in the classroom.
2. tout [táut] 크게 선전하다
상품을 판매하거나 지지를 얻을 목적으로 요란하게 강조하고 선전한다는 의미다.
The pharmaceutical company touted the success of its new weight loss pill in its new advertisements.
그 제약회사는 새로운 광고를 통해 새로 개발한 살빼는 약의 성공을 크게 선전했다.
● 그의 첫 앨범은 10대 펑크록 앨범 중 하나로 칭송을 받아 왔다.
His first album has been touted as one of the top 10 punk rock albums of all time.
3. trumpet [trʌ́mpit] 찬양하다, 치켜세우다
악기 ‘트럼펫’을 뜻하지만, 마치 트럼펫을 불듯 시끄럽게 선전하고 대대적으로 홍보한다는 의미로도 쓰인다.
In a series of TV commercials, the ruling party proudly trumpeted a recent poll that had the president's approval rating at 70%.
TV 광고를 통해 여당은 대통령의 국정 지지도가 70%라는 최근의 여론조사 결과를 자랑스럽게 떠들어댔다.
● 그 기업은 오늘 보도 자료를 통해 자사의 새 휴대전화 판매가 100만 대를 넘어섰다고 선전했다.
In a press release today, the company trumpeted passing the one million mark in sales of its new mobile phone.
4. underscore [ʌ́ndərskɔ́ːr] 강조하다
score는 ‘점수’라는 뜻이지만, 원래는 줄을 그어 집계하는 것을 말한다. underscore는 말 그대로 ‘밑에 줄(score)을 긋는다’라는 뜻에서 유래하여 ‘강조한다’라는 의미를 지닌다. 컴퓨터 자판의 _ 표시도 underscore라고 한다.
The latest survey underscores the fact that despite recent progress in Korean- Japanese relations, many Koreans still harbor resentment towards the Japanese.
최근의 조사 결과는 최근 한일 관계에 진전이 있었음에도 많은 한국인들이 아직도 일본에 대해 분개심을 품고 있음을 강조한다.
● 이번 사태는 군의 전반적 개혁이 필요함을 더욱 강조해서 보여준다.
This incident further underscores the need for comprehensive military reform.
<반항, 저항>
1. about-face [əbáutfèis] 태도의 변화
about-face는 ‘뒤로 돌아’라는 구령이다. 비유적으로 입장이나 태도가 돌변하는 것을 일컫는다.
In a dramatic about-face, the candidate now supports the legalization of marijuana, which may help explain his sudden drop in the polls.
그 후보는 갑자기 입장이 돌변해서 지금은 대마초의 합법화를 지지하는데, 이것이 지지도가 갑작스레 하락한 이유인 것 같다.
● 그는 유세중에 갑자기 사퇴했고 사람들은 그의 갑작스러운 태도 돌변의 이유를 알 수 없었다.
People couldn’t understand the reasons for his abrupt about-face when he suddenly dropped off the campaign trail.
2. buck [bʌ́k] 거역하다
말이 등에 탄 사람을 떨어뜨리려고 격렬히 움직이는 모습을 buck이라고 표현하며, ‘저항하다’라는 의미를 담고 있다. buck the trend는 ‘시류를 따르지 않고 거역하다’라는 뜻이다.
While many guys these days are wearing "skinny jeans," Travis bucked the trend and preferred loose fit jeans.
많은 남성들이 요즘 스키니 진을 입는 반면 트래비스는 유행을 따르지 않고 헐렁한 느낌의 청바지를 더 좋아했다.
● 미국 증시를 따르지 않고 아시아 시장은 오늘 하락했다.
Asian stock markets fell today, bucking the Wall Street trend.
3. chant [tʃǽnt] 구호를 외치다
칸타타(cantata), 샹송(chanson) 등과 같이 ‘노래하다’라는 뜻을 지닌 어원에서 파생한 단어다. ‘구호를 외치다’라는 의미를 지니며, 명사로 그런 구호를 뜻하기도 한다(enchanting 항목 참조).
To this day, student demonstrators in France regularly take to the streets to chant slogans of the country's revolution: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity!
오늘날까지도 프랑스의 학생 시위대는 정기적으로 가두에 나가 프랑스혁명의 정신인 자유, 평등, 박애의 구호를 외친다.
