According to statistics from TransferMarkt and BBC, Manchester City spent nearly $223 million in the January transfer window — almost matching the combined expenditure of the other 19 Premier League clubs.
Out of the approximately $459 million spent by English Premier League teams in total, City’s spending ranked as the second-highest in history. Chelsea holds the record with a staggering $341 million spent in 2023.
City’s $223 million outlay is the club’s highest since the summer of 2017, when the team spent $279 million in a single window.
Last month, four of the most expensive players signed were brought to City, with only Jhon Duran’s $80 million transfer from Aston Villa to Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League surpassing City’s $73 million purchase of Omar Marmoush.
Premier League clubs spent nearly double what Italy’s Serie A did ($226 million), with Spain’s La Liga spending over 15 times less, highlighting the financial gap in European soccer.
