South Korean police plan to develop an artificial intelligence system for patrol cars that can analyze voice and video patterns to determine if an emergency response is necessary, a local daily reported Friday.

According to the Seoul Economic Daily, citing a police report, the plan to develop an active AI solution for movable platforms involves investing 13.99 billion won ($9.7 million) from July through 2029.

The system will include a voice recognition function to analyze situations based on vocal patterns. A video analysis function will detect cars involved in suspected illegal activities while providing information on potential hindrances for police officers, such as accidents or construction en route to a crime scene.

The AI system will be equipped with an interpretation function that can be used for crimes involving non-Korean speakers.

South Korean police have sought ways to integrate AI software into crime fighting. AI-based criminal investigation was cited as one of the key missions for the National Police Agency-led research and development plans rolled out last month. It was given a budget of 64 billion won this year.

The NPA plans to deploy the video analysis program for surveillance footage involved in child abuse cases starting in the third quarter of this year. Police claim it will be able to analyze months’ worth of surveillance footage within days.
