이번 회에는 저희 책 Advanced Vocab에서 소개한 중상급 영단어들을 알려드립니다. 단어의 우리말 뜻을 기억하는 데에 그치지 않고, 난이도 있는 단어를 실제로 활용하는 단계까지 나아가 보기 바랍니다.
<기타 움직임과 행동>
1. slouch [sláutʃ] 구부정하게 서다
‘쳐지고 느슨하다’라는 뜻을 지닌 slack과 어원이 같은 단어다. 구부정한 자세를 취하거나 구부정한 자세로 어슬렁거리는 모양을 표현할 때 쓴다.
"Don’t slouch! Stand up straight, shoulders back! Chins up!" called the girls' ballet teacher.
“구부정하게 있지 말고, 똑바로 서! 어깨 뒤로 젖히고! 고개는 들고!”여학생들의 발레 선생님은 소리쳤다.
● 그는 항상 손을 주머니에 넣고 구부정한 자세로 다닌다.
He is always keeping his hands in his pockets and slouching.
2. trickle [tríkl] 흘러내리다
액체가 흘러내린다는 뜻을 지닌다. 특히 경제에서 고소득층의 부가 중산층이나 저소득층으로 흘러 내려오는 것을 표현할 때 쓴다.
Tax cuts for the rich stimulate spending which eventually trickles down to the lower class.
부자를 위한 감세는 소비를 자극해서 결국 하위 계층까지 이어지게 된다.
● 트리클업 효과에서는 저소득층에 직접 혜택을 줄 경우 사회의 생산성이 향상되어 그 혜택이 고소득층에까지 미치게 된다.
In the trickle up effect, direct benefits to the poor will boost the productivity of a society and benefits will eventually trickle up to the wealthy.
<호소, 간청, 요청>
1. petition [pitíʃən] 청원, 탄원서
동사로 ‘간청하다’라는 의미이고 명사로 ‘간청’, ‘탄원’을 뜻한다. 청원을 위한 서명운동을 collect signatures for petition이라고 표현한다.
The boy went around to his neighbors, collecting signatures for the petition to have the vacant lot at the end of the street converted into a public park.
그 소년은 동네를 돌아다니며 길 끝의 공터를 공원으로 만들어달라는 청원을 위한 서명을 받았다.
● 시민 단체들은 개헌을 위해 1000만 명의 서명을 받겠다고 선언했다.
Activist groups proclaimed that they were going to collect ten million petition signatures in order to revise the Constitution.
2. solicit [səlísit] ~을 해달라고 하다, 간청하다
solicit은 solicit contribution/sex/bribe처럼 뭔가를 얻기 위해 요청하는 것을 표현할 때 쓴다. unsolicited call은 소비자가 원하지 않는 홍보성 전화를 의미한다.
In this day and age, consumers are bombarded not only with unsolicited calls from telemarketers but also unsolicited emails known as "spam mail."
요즘에는 소비자들이 텔레마케터들에게서 원치 않는 전화 공세를 받는 것뿐 아니라 스팸 메일이라고 하는 원치 않는 이메일 공세도 받는다.
● 미성년자에게 성행위를 청한 혐의로 40세 기자가 구속되었다.
A 40-year-old reporter has been arrested for allegedly trying to solicit sex from a minor.
<다툼, 분쟁, 경쟁>
1. altercation [ɔ́ːltərkéiʃən] 언쟁, 격론
other를 뜻하는 alter-가 어원인 단어로, 다른 사람과 말싸움을 한다는 의미다. 물리적 충돌을 동반하기도 하는 시끄럽고 격한 말싸움을 뜻하며, 특히 스포츠 선수들 간의 다툼을 altercation 이라고 한다.
The police had been called twice to settle violent altercations between the woman and her husband.
그 여인과 남편 간의 격한 말싸움을 말리기 위해 경찰이 두 번이나 출동했다.
● 말다툼을 하다가 한 사람이 다른 사람의 가슴을 밀쳐서 바닥으로 쓰러뜨리는 바람에 싸움으로 번졌다.
The altercation eventually led to a physical fight when one man pushed the other in the chest, causing him to fall on the floor.
2. bickering [bíkəriŋ] 다툼
‘사소한 일로 다투다’라는 뜻인 동사 bicker의 명사형이다. 특히 형제들 간의 다툼을 sibling bickering이라고 한다(sibling 항목 참조).
The Kim brothers continued their sibling bickering throughout the reception, making the wedding celebration extremely unpleasant for everyone.
김씨 집안 형제들은 결혼식 피로연 내내 다툼을 계속해서 결혼식이 모두에게 불쾌한 경험이 되게 만들었다.
● 양당은 쟁점이었던 노동법 개정안에 합의함으로써 수개월 간의 정쟁에 마침표를 찍었다.
Both parties agreed on the controversial Labor Law, ending months of political bickering.
3. brawl [brɔ́ːl] 싸움
술집 등 공공장소에서 소란스럽게 발생하는 주먹다짐이나 싸움을 의미한다.
The drunken bar brawls in the movies always feature one guy smashing a bottle over another guy's head.
술집에서 취한 사람들끼리 싸우는 영화 장면에는 항상 한 남자가 병으로 다른 사람 머리를 내리치는 장면이 나온다.
● 거리 싸움은 진 팀의 팬이 이긴 팀의 팬에게 소리를 지르고 욕설을 하면서 시작되었다.
A street brawl broke out when fans of the losing team started yelling and swearing at fans of the winning team.
