North Korea’s state media on Friday reported on impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol’s detention by the South’s anti-corruption agency over his botched Dec. 3 martial law imposition.
"The international community is shining a spotlight on the chaotic situation in puppet South Korea by publishing breaking news on puppet Yoon Suk Yeol's detention as a sitting president for the first time and his transfer to investigative authorities," reported the Rodong Sinmun, Pyongyang’s daily newspaper for general readers.
The state media highlighted that “thousands” of investigators gathered in front of the presidential residence, where Yoon had been holding out in recent weeks until he was detained by the investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials and police officers on Wednesday.
It also said that Yoon could be the fifth South Korean president to be imprisoned, apparently citing a recent article titled “Exiled, shot, impeached, jailed: A history of South Korean presidents” published in The Washington Post.
The Rodong Sinmun also forecast that the political turmoil in South Korea will become more aggravated with the detained president protesting that the probe against him is illegal.
While the Rodong Sinmun frequently published news on rallies held in the South in November calling for Yoon’s resignation, it has been treading cautiously on reporting on Yoon’s martial law decree.
