A consultative body between the government and the National Assembly held its first working-level meeting on Thursday, where its members decided to establish a leadership committee aimed at normalizing state affairs. The committee will consist of the acting president, the National Assembly speaker and the leaders of the two major parties.
Following the meeting, Rep. Kim Sang-hoon of the People Power Party explained that preparations for the committee's launch are still in the early stages, and further discussions are needed for the plan to materialize.
"For now, we are keeping the door open (for the launch of the committee) and are planning to go in the direction of establishing the committee after reporting to the leaders of both parties and renegotiating once we bridge our differences on several issues," Rep. Kim told reporters.
The government and the rival parties have yet to reach an agreement on several issues tied to state affairs, according to Rep. Jin Sung-joon of the Democratic Party.
Thursday's meeting comes as the Cabinet struggles to function amid a leadership void following President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment last month. Political gridlock has persisted within the parliament over key issues, including the possible drafting of supplementary budgets and bills to initiate special counsel investigations into Yoon over his botched imposition of martial law on Dec. 3, as well as multiple scandals surrounding first lady Kim Keon Hee.
