The Joint Chiefs of Staff on Thursday hosted a welcoming ceremony for the new commander of the South Korea-US Combined Forces Command, an event underscoring that the decades-old alliance between Seoul and Washington remains strong despite the ongoing political turmoil here.
An honor guard ceremony was held for Gen. Xavier Brunson, who assumed the role of the commander of the CFC last month, in the weeks after President Yoon Suk Yeol's botched declaration of martial law on Dec. 3.
Adm. Kim Myung-soo, who chairs South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, marched alongside Brunson in the ceremony, which was held at the Defense Ministry in Yongsan-gu, central Seoul on Thursday morning.
Ahead of Thursday's ceremony, Kim and Brunson reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral military cooperation in a phone call last month.
