A letter that showed Adolf Hitler protected a Jewish man, has been made public by a German newspaper.
As Hitler always was proud of his time in the First World War, Ernst Hess, who was Hilter’s commander during the war, was allowed to survive the second war at Hitler’s request. According to news reports, the head of the Gestapo and the S.S., Heinrich Himmler, ordered through the letter in 1940 that Hess should received “relief and protection as per the Fuhrer’s wishes.”
Hess was classified as a “full-blooded Jew” by Nazi race laws because of his Jewish mother. As he was forced to quit his position as a judge in 1936, Hess sent a letter to Hitler, asking for an exception from the race law. Even though he was eventually sent to a concentration camp as a slave laborer, he could avoid extermination because of his privileged marriage with a German woman. However, in 1941, the Nazis revoked his protection and classified Hess as “a Jew like any other.”
He died in 1983 after a successful career in West Germany.
