<자극, 촉진, 회복>
1. galvanize [ɡǽlvənàiz] 자극하다
Galvani라는 18세기 이탈리아 물리학자의 전기 자극 요법에서 유래한 단어다. 전기로 자극을 주듯 여론을 자극하거나 지지를 이끌어낸다는 뜻을 지닌다.
To successfully pass his latest bill, Senator Jones had to galvanize support from both Republicans and Democrats.
자신이 최근 제안한 법안을 성공적으로 통과시키기 위해 존스 상원의원은 민주•공화 양당의 지지를 끌어내야 했다.
● 유엔 사무총장은 위험한 핵물질이 테러리스트의 손에 들어가지 않도록 국제 사회가 조치를 취할 것을 촉구했다.
The UN Secretary General galvanized the international community to take action to prevent vulnerable nuclear material from ending up in the hands of terrorists.
2. goad [ɡóud] 자극하다
가축을 몰기 위해 찌르는 ‘막대기’에서 유래했다. 어떤 반응을 이끌어내기 위해 괴롭히며 자극을 준다는 뜻을 지닌다.
Although the police were goaded by protesters who yelled insults, the officers did not respond, enabling peace to be maintained.
시위대는 모욕적인 말을 내뱉으며 경찰을 자극했지만, 경찰관들은 반응하지 않았고 평온을 유지할 수 있었다.
● 그 어린 학생들은 선배들이 부추겨서 서로 싸우게 되었다고 말했다.
The young schoolchildren said that they were goaded into fighting each other by their seniors.
3. impetus [ímpətəs] 자극, 동력
im(in)+petus(appetite, petition, compete의 -pete와 같은 어원으로 seek를 뜻함)로 구성된 단어다. 어떤 일이 발생하거나 빨리 진행되도록 하는 자극이나 동력이 된다는 의미다.
The revelation that the U.S. ranks 30th among 31 industrialized nations in infant mortality served as the impetus for the increase in prenatal care funding.
미국의 영아 사망률이 31개 산업국 중 30위라는 사실이 밝혀진 것이 산전 조리 지원 기금 증가의 원동력이 되었다.
● 협상단 교체가 정체된 협상에 새로운 자극이 되었다.
A change of staff gave fresh impetus to the stalled negotiation.
4. instigate [ínstəɡèit] 조장하다, 부추기다
in(in)+stigate(stick과 같은 어원으로 ‘찌르다’, ‘자극하다’라는 뜻)로 구성된 단어다. ‘선동하다’, ‘초래하다’라는 의미를 지닌다.
The protestors claimed that they did not instigate the violence and were simply defending themselves from the police officers.
시위대는 자신들이 폭력을 조장한 게 아니라 경찰로부터 자신을 방어했을 뿐이라고 주장했다.
● 변화를 불러오는 것은 시장 경쟁이지 정부 간섭이 아니다.
It is market competition that instigates change, not government intervention.
5. precipitate [prisípətèit] 촉진시키다
‘급하게 아래로 떨어진다’는 뜻에서 유래하여, 급격히 어떤 상태가 되는 것, 특히 안 좋은 일을 촉진하는 것을 표현한다.
The Fed precipitated the financial crisis by keeping interest rates too low.
미국 연방준비제도 이사회는 금리를 너무 낮게 유지해서 금융 위기를 촉진시켰다.
● 염분이 너무 많은 식사는 고혈압을 일으켜 심장 마비나 뇌졸중을 촉진할 수 있다.
Too much salt in the diet leads to high blood pressure, which can precipitate a heart attack or stroke.
6. prod [prɑ́d] 찌르다, 재촉하다
prick처럼 ‘뾰족한 것으로 찌르다’라는 뜻을 지닌 단어로, ‘자극해서 ~하도록 시키다’라는 의미로 쓴다.
The cows were being prodded with electric shocks and led into the slaughterhouse.
소들은 전기 충격기로 자극을 주어 도살장으로 인도되었다.
● 시민 단체는 미온적인 의원들을 재촉하여 그 법안을 통과시키도록 했다.
The civil rights group prodded the reluctant lawmakers to pass the bill.
7. recuperate [rikjúːpərèit] 회복하다
질병이나 수술에서 회복한다는 뜻이다. recover와 같은 의미다.
His friends were greatly relieved that David was home now and recuperating from the operation.
데이비드가 퇴원했고 수술에서 회복되고 있어서 친구들은 크게 안심했다.
● 어머니가 회복하시는 동안 우리집에 머무시기를 바란다.
I hope my mother will stay at my house while she recuperates.
8. rekindle [riːkíndl] 다시 불러일으키다
re(again)+kindle(candle과 같은 어원으로 ‘불을 붙인다’는 뜻)로 구성된 단어다. 다시 불을 붙이듯이 예전의 관심이나 애정을 불러일으키는 경우에 쓴다.
The couple sought to rekindle their lost love by visiting the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon.
부부는 신혼여행 때 묵었던 호텔을 다시 찾아가 잃어버린 서로에 대한 사랑을 되살리고자 노력했다.
● UFO를 목격했다는 이야기들이 외계인에 대한 나의 관심을 다시금 불러일으켰다.
All those stories about sighting UFOs rekindled my interest in extraterrestrials.
