5 Ho-Am Prize winners picked

Samsung Group announced Wednesday the five winners of its Ho-Am Prize for this year in the fields of science, engineering, medicine, arts and community service.

For science, Yonsei University professor Cheon Jin-woo was awarded for his work on nanomaterials and UCLA professor Kim Chang-jin received the award for his contribution to electrowetting in the engineering category.


Seoul National University professor Kim Sung-hoon received the medical award for his work on aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase and its role in cell development.

For arts, modern artist Kim Soo-ja was selected and nurse Baek Young-shim won the community service award.

Each recipient will receive 100 million won during the awarding ceremony at the Ho-Am Art Hall on June 1.

The Ho-Am Prize was established by Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee in 1990 in memory of his late father, Samsung founder Lee Byung-chull.
