가상화 솔루션 전문 기업 브이엠웨어 (VMware) CEO 팻 겔싱어는 삼성전자가 보안분야에서 고객인 동시에 큰 경쟁상대임을 강조했다.
겔싱어 사장은 지난 5일 방한기념 기자간담회 직후, “삼성 녹스는 우리 쪽 기술과 겹치는 부분이 많다, 그래서 우리로서는 (삼성을) 막고 싶다,” 라며 속내를 보였다.
그러면서 다양한 기기에 탑재할 수 있다는 점에서 VMware의 가상화 소프트웨어 프로그램에 있어서는 삼성보다 한 수위라고 주장했다.
삼성전자는 올해 MWC에서 처음으로 녹스를 선보이며 보안 솔루션에 대한 관심을 드러냈다. BYOD (Bring-your-own-device) 트렌드에 발맞추어 디바이스의 보안을 강화하기 위해 dual-persona라고 하는, 즉 하나의 기기로 핸드폰 두 개를 사용하는 것 같은 효과를 내면서 보안을 강화하는 솔루션이다.
한 가지 단점이 있다면 녹스는 삼성 기기에만 탑재될 수 있다는 점이다.
반면 세계 가상화 소프트웨어 리더인 VMware의 솔루션은 안드로이드폰은 갤럭시, 옵티머스, HTC등 기기에 상관없이 호라이즌 워크스페이스(Horizon Workspace)와 같은 프로그램을 탑재할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 애플에는 컨테이너 방식의 보안 솔루션을 제공하고 있다.
한편, 삼성은 8년만에 맞은 애널리스트데이에서 M&A를 통한 미래 발전 전략을 발표하면서 전략적인 파트너를 찾기 위한 노력을 한층 강화할 것으로 보인다. (코리아헤럴드 김지현 기자)

VMware anxious about competing against Samsung Knox

VMware’s chief executive officer tried to appear nonchalant about Samsung, saying he has held good meetings with the chief information officers and wants to maintain strong ties, but he couldn’t hide his anxiety.
“There’s (Samsung’s) Knox platform, and some of those technologies compete directly with our technology, so we’re trying to block it,” CEO Pat Gelsinger told The Korea Herald.
He also said he believes VMware to be a better partner than Samsung in that the U.S.-based company delivers solutions across multiple platforms, whereas the Knox is exclusively for Samsung devices.
But the CEO added that Samsung was still a strong partner, and that he was here to meet with it and others that VMware caters to.
Gelsinger visited Korea this week for the VMware vForum 2013 after a tour in Japan.
VMware is in a unique relation in terms of its ties with local companies, particularly Samsung with which it has a friend-and-foe relationship.
As a world leader in virtualization software, its data security program, the Horizon Workspace, runs on Samsung’s Galaxy S3 and S4 phones, along with the G2 and Optimus View from LG, via Verizon Wireless networks in the U.S.
The service is not available here.
At the same time, Samsung and VMware are also rivals in data security, with Samsung’s Knox security technology bearing a strong resemblance to VMware’s Horizon Mobile.
Knox is an Android-based security solution created by Samsung that basically allows two phones to exist in a single handset to provide upgraded data security. Unlike VMware solutions that run on all Android phones, Knox is Samsung exclusive.
