최근 중국 온라인 소셜미디어 사이트에서는 ‘버짓 와이프’가 되기 위한 기준에 관한 뜨거운 논쟁이 벌어지고 있다. 

‘버짓 와이프’는 중국에서 나온 신조어로 평범한 아내가 되기 위한 여러가지 기준을 충족한 여성을 지칭한다. 이 용어는 처음 익명의 인터넷 사용자에 의해 만들어져 중국판 트위터인 시나 웨이보에서 큰 화제를 불러일으켰다.

다음 리스트는 버짓 와이프가 되기 위한 기준이다 

- 160에서 176센티미터 사이의 신장
- 45에서 54 킬로그램의 몸무게
- 어깨까지 내려오는 긴 머리
- 따뜻하고 차분한 성격
- B에서 C컵 사이의 가슴 사이즈
- ‘꽃뱀’ 이 아닌 여자
- ‘꼬리치지’ 않는 여자
- 약간은 섹시한 여자
- 월 평균 500달러에서 1000달러 이상 버는 여자
- 학사학위 혹은 그 이상 소지자
- 청소와 빨래를 할 줄 아는 여자
- 책임감 있고 공감해줄 수 있는 여자
- 예의있게 말하는 여자
- 참하게 교육받고 합리적인 여자 

이 리스트가 웨이보에 올라왔을 때 해당 글은 1만 건 이상 리트윗 되었고 6,700건 가량의 답멘션이 왔다. 

중국 유학생 왕명원 씨는 “이 리스트는 터무니없어요. 일반적인 중국 여성이 버짓 와이프 기준에 맞추기는 매우 힘듭니다” 라고 코리아헤럴드를 통해 밝혔다. 

한 웨이보 사용자에 의해 진행된 설문조사에 따르면 약 50퍼센트 가량의 응답자가 버짓 와이프가 되기 위한 요건을 충족하기 힘들다고 이야기했다. 다른 15퍼센트의 응답자는 해당 리스트는 신빙성이 없고 일반적인 중국 여성을 묘사하지 않는다 라고 언급했다. (코리아헤럴드)

‘Budget wife’ standards spark debate

A newly coined term called “budget wife” is apparently one of the hotly debated topics on Chinese online social media. 

Budget wife, or “jingji shiyong nu” in Chinese, is a neologism referring to women having several characteristics required of an average wife. The term was first introduced by an anonymous Internet user and went viral on Sina Weibo, China’s most popular micro-blogging platform. 

The following is the list of standards to be qualified as a budget wife: 

- Be between 160 and 176 centimeter tall
- Weigh between 45 and 54 kilograms
- Have long hair that trails over shoulders
- Be warm and mild in personality
- Have B- to C-cup size breasts
- Not be a “gold digger”
- Not be a flirt
- Be a little horny
- Earn between roughly $500 to $1000 per month
- Have a bachelor’s degree or above
- Know how to cook and wash clothes
- Be responsible and sympathetic
- Speak appropriately
- Be educated and reasonable

Since the list was published on Weibo, it has been re-tweeted more than 10,000 times and generated some 6,700 replies.

“The list is totally absurd. It is almost impossible for typical Chinese women to meet the budget wife standards,” said Wang Myung-won, a Chinese overseas student residing in Seoul.

According to a poll conducted by one Weibo user, more than 50 percent of the respondents said the criteria for a budget wife were too demanding to fulfill. Another 15 percent said the given standards did not describe regular women.
