비영리단체 마스원이 화요일 ‘화성인’을 모집한다는 공고를 내 SF(공상과학)소설 팬들로부터 화제를 불러일으켰다.

1년 동안 기금을 조성하고 기술적 문제를 보완한 후 마스원은 화성에서 거주할 수 있는 참가자를 뽑기로 결정했다.

바스 랜드로프 마스원 공동창립자는 “이번 선발 프로그램을 시작하게 되어 우리는 매우 기쁩니다. 마스원의 프로젝트는 국제적이고 그래서 자신이 정말 원하는지, 준비는 다 되었는지 스스로에게 물어봐야 합니다. 만약 그렇다고 확신을 가지면 우리에게 말해주길 바랍니다” 라고 언급했다.

네덜란드의 과학자들이 주축이 되어 꾸려진 마스원은 화성에 인간이 정착하는 것을 목표로 설립되었다. 마스원 공식 홈페이지 로드맵에 따르면 2022년까지 통신용 인공위성, 탐사로봇 등 인간이 화성에서 살 수 있도록 하는 다양한 필수품을 실어 나를 예정이다.

총 4번의 선발 과정을 거친 후보자들은 24명에서 40명 정도로 추려지고, 그 중 전세계 방송을 통해 선발되는 최종 네 명이 화성에서 살게 될 예정이다.

Mars One takes applications for aspiring Mars inhabitants

The nonprofit organization Mars One started recruiting potential Mars residents on Tuesday, news that thrilled sci-fi lovers around the world.

After a year of attracting donations and coping with technical problems, the organization kicked off its first recruiting process aimed at seeking potential Mars inhabitants.

“We are very excited about launching the selection program. This is an international mission and it is very important for the project that anyone anywhere can ask themselves: Do I want this? Am I ready for this? If the answer is yes, then we want to hear from you,” said Bas Lansdorp, cofounder of Mars One.

The number of applicants for the project will be trimmed down to some 24 to 40 after four rounds of a selection process. There will be an audition vote to pick the final four successful candidates.

The Europe-based organization was founded to establish a human settlement on Mars. According to the road map shown on its official website, Mars One is scheduled to launch a communication satellite, settlement rovers and other necessities for humans to survive on the foreign planet by 2022.
