A 44-year-old man who allegedly collected insurance proceeds by deliberately causing more than a hundred traffic accidents was arrested for fraud on Tuesday.

The man, only identified by his surname Lee, took a total of 270 million won ($244,000) in insurance payments and settlement money from victims for 169 accidents in 19 months. Lee caused as many as four accidents a day.

Lee targeted and crashed into vehicles which were changing lanes, crossing the center line or going the wrong way on a one way road. The seven cars used for his crime included two of his own, while the rest belonged to others.

Police said that Lee also asked for settlements from those sensitive about an accident record such as taxi drivers and drivers under the influence. Police found the man suspicious as he came to report two accidents in ten minutes in July. In addition, Lee caused more than 20 accidents during an investigation into his activities.

“We searched the whole accident history reported under Lee’s name as we found something to be clarified after checking the vehicle’s blackbox,” police said.

Meanwhile, Lee has denied the charges, saying “I didn’t have the intention to rip them off. The accidents occurred due to my speeding habit and short temper.”

"속지마세요" 고의로 교통사고로 억대 합의금 챙겨

1년 7개월간 약 170차례에 걸쳐 고의로  교통사 고를 내 억대의 합의금과 보험금을 가로챈 40대 남성이 경찰에 붙잡혔다.

서울 혜화경찰서는 지난해 2월부터 최근까지 서울 강남과 경기도 남양주, 구리 일대 도로에서 169건의 교통사고를 유발한 뒤 합의금 등의 명목으로 2억7천만원을 받아 챙긴 혐의(상습사기 등)로 이모(44·무직)씨를 구속했다고 24일 밝혔다.

이씨는 심야에 차선을 변경 중이거나 중앙선을 침범한 차량, 일방통행길을 거꾸 로 들어온 차량 등을 발견하면 자신의 차를 급가속해 충돌하는 수법으로 사고를 낸 뒤 합의금과 보험금을 챙긴 것으로 조사됐다.

이씨는 본인 소유의 2대와 타인 명의의 5대 등 차량 7대를 번갈이 운행하면서 많게는 하루에 4건의 사고를 유발한 것으로 드러났다.

또 사고기록에 민감할 수밖에 없는 회사택시 운전자나 음주 운전자 등을 표적으 로 삼아 현장에서 집요하게 합의금을 요구했다고 경찰은 전했다.

이씨는 지난 7월 서울 종로구 도로에서 10분 간격으로 두 건의 교통사고를 내고 경찰서에 신고하러 갔다가 사고 과정을 수상하게 여기고 추적수사한 경찰에 의해 덜 미를 잡혔다.

특히 그는 지난 8월 보험사기 혐의로 이 경찰서에 입건돼 조사를 받던 기간에도 20여건의 고의 교통사고를 낸 것으로 드러났다.

경찰은 “차량 블랙박스에 담긴 동영상을 확인한 결과 석연치 않은 점이 많아 이 씨 명의로 접수된 교통사고 기록을 전부 조회했다”며 “유사한 수법으로 많은 사고를 낸 점을 확인하고 3개월간 추적수사를 진행했다”고 말했다.

이씨는 경찰 조사에서 “본래 성질이 급해서 가속운전을 하다보니 사고가 많았던 것이지, 돈을 뜯어내려는 것은 아니었다”며 혐의를 부인하는 것으로 전해졌다.
