An award-winning crime writer’s fraudulent reviews on Amazon.com from four years ago have come to light, earning him criticism from readers and fellow authors alike.

The 47-year-old British novelist RJ Ellory posted under assumed names like “Jelly Bean” and “Nicodemus Jones” while applauding his own works and disparaging works of fellow crime writers, according to news sources.

“I would highly recommend this book to anyone who really wants to experience a class read. Just buy it, read it, and make up your own mind. Whatever else it might do, it will touch your soul,” he wrote about his book, "A Quiet Belief in Angels." He added that it was a “masterpiece.”

Under those same names, he belittled novels of other authors. About "Dark Blood" by Stuart MacBride, he wrote, “This is the second of this author’s books I have read, and, to tell you the truth, I can’t be bothered anymore.”

Oddly, he did not put in a lot of effort to hide his real identity as he signed the review by “Nicodemus Jones” with his real name, Roger, and included the suggestion to email him through his website, www.rjellory.com.

Ellory issued an apology on Saturday. “I wholeheartedly regret the lapse of judgment that allowed personal opinions to be disseminated in this way and I would like to apologize to my readers and the writing community,” he said.

그의 책 ‘그는 천사를 믿었다(A Quiet Belief in Angels)’에는 “양질의 독서를 경험하고 자 하는 이들에게 이 책을 권장한다. 우선 사서 읽고 마음을 정하라. 이 책은 당신의 영혼을 감동시킬 것이다”라는 리뷰를 작성했다. 그는 또한 자신의 책을 걸작이라고 일컬었다.

엘로리는 같은 닉네임을 사용해 동료 작가들을 무시하는 발언을 서슴지 않았다. 스튜어트 맥브라이의 ‘다크 블러드(Dark Blood)’에 대한 리뷰에는 “이 저자의 책을 두 권째 읽었는데, 사실대로 말하자면 도저히 더 이상 읽어줄 수 가 없다”고 적었다.

이상한 점은 그가 자신의 신상을 속이기 위해 큰 노력을 하지 않았다는 것이다. 그는 자신의 실명으로 회원가입을 하고 이메일에 자신의 웹사이트 주소(www.rjellory.com)를 포함시킨 것으로 알려졌다.

엘로리는 지난 토요일(현지시각) 공식 사과문에서 “이런 방식으로 개인적인 의견을 전달하게 된 잘못된 판단에 대해 진심으로 유감스럽게 생각한다. 독자들과 문학 공동체에 사과한다”고 말했다.
