U.S. to slap antidumping duties on LG, Samsung fridges

The U.S. Department of Commerce said Monday it has decided to impose antidumping tariffs on refrigerators made by Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc., which Whirlpool Corp. accused of being sold at below-market prices.

The department said that it will impose antidumping duties of as much as 30.34 percent on fridge-freezers manufactured by South Korea's Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.

The case will be referred to the U.S. International Trade Commission, which is set to soon make its final ruling on the duties.

Samsung Electronics may pay an antidumping tariff of 15.95 percent for refrigerators produced in Mexico and 5.16 percent for those from South Korea, the department said.

LG Electronics will likely pay 30.34 percent for products made in Mexico and 15.41 percent on South Korea units, it said.

Whirlpool has lodged a series of petitions against South Korean home appliance manufacturers, citing their alleged unlawful trade practices. (Yonhap News)

미국 상무부는 19일(현지시간) 삼성전자와 LG전자가 한국과 멕시코 공장에서 생산한 하단냉동고형 냉장고에 대해 반덤핑 관세를 부과하기로 결정했다.

상무부는 이날 결정문을 통해 삼성전자 냉장고에 대한 반덤핑 관세율을 한국산은 5.16%, 멕시코산은 15.95%라고 밝혔다. 또 LG전자 냉장고는 한국산 15.41%, 멕시 코산은 30.34%로 각각 적용했다.

이와 함께 스웨덴의 가전업체인 일렉트로룩스가 멕시코 공장에서 생산한 냉장고 에 대해서도 22.94%의 반덤핑 관세율을 결정했다.

이날 상무부 결정에 따라 미 국제무역위원회(ITC)는 다음달 회의를 열어 이들 업체의 냉장고가 미국내 관련 산업에 피해를 줬는지 여부를 판단해 최종적으로 덤핑 관세 부과를 결정하게 된다.

이번 반덤핑 관세 부과 결정은 미 가전업체 월풀의 제소에 따른 것으로, 상무부 는 지난해 10월 덤핑 예비판정을 내렸었다.

월풀은 이날 "전세계 가전시장의 선두주자로서 2만3천명의 미국 노동자를 보호 하고 소비자들이 원하는 고품질의 상품을 생산하기 위해 노력하고 있다"고 주장했다 .

이에 대해 삼성전자는 보도자료를 내고 "상무부의 결정은 잘못된 조사 방식으로 이뤄진 것"이라면서 "실망스럽다"고 반박했다.
