LS Cable and System has become the first Korean firm to develop a portable electric vehicle charger, the company announced Monday.

According to the company, the charger supplies 3.3 kilowatts of electricity to the vehicle using the standard outlet installed in homes. The device can fully recharge batteries fitted in Hyundai Motor Co.’s electric vehicle BlueOn in six hours, the company said.

According to LS Cable and System, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy has plans to increase electric vehicles’ share of the local market for new vehicles to 20 percent by 2020.

In addition, the ministry’s plans have supplied 2.2 million chargers by that year, offering good prospects for the market, the company said.

The company said that as the device meets the International Electric Commission’s standards, its development will also enable the company to enter the global market for electric vehicle chargers in which U.S. and Japanese firms currently have the lead.
