Figure skater Kim Yu-na not fazed by youngster in Sochi Reigning Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu-na said Wednesday she is not fazed by the sudden emergence of a youngster in Russia at the ongoing Winter Games, as she prepares for the final hurrah of her illustrious career.

Kim departed for Russia's Sochi, the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics, on Wednesday in pursuit of her second straight gold medal in the ladies' singles event. The competition starts with the short program next Wednesday local time, followed by the free skate the next day.

Kim is trying to become only the third figure skater to win consecutive Olympic gold medals in the ladies' singles. And the two-time world champion may have to fend off an unexpected challenger in the form of Yulia Lipnitskaya.

The 15-year-old Russian has become a darling of her native country, if not the entire figure skating world, by helping the Olympic host win the inaugural gold medal in the figure skating team event.

Seemingly oblivious to pressure, the exuberant Lipnitskaya led the field with 72.90 points in the short program and 141.51 points in free skating, both the best marks of her young senior career.

The total of 214.41 points is almost 10 points better than Kim's score in her only international competition of the season, the Golden Spin of Zagreb last December, and only about four points shy of Kim's winning score at last year's world championships.

Powered by acrobatic moves and spins so fast she became a blur, Lipnitskaya outscored older skaters regarded as rivals to Kim, such as Mao Asada of Japan and Carolina Kostner of Italy. While the media has been breathlessly trying to set up a new rivalry between Kim and Lipnitskaya, the South Korean on Wednesday refused to get dragged into it.

"No one skater can perform well every time, and judging standards may also change. I can't control them," Kim told reporters at Incheon International Airport. "I have to skate the best I can and accept the result. It's obviously not going to help me to worry about how others do. The key is to try to do the best I can."

Her rivals for the countries that qualified for the team event have already been in Sochi for a few days and have had their first-hand taste of the ice at the site of their singles competition, the Iceberg Skating Palace.

Kim dispelled concerns that she may lag behind others in her preparation because she's arriving in Sochi much closer to the competition. She said it may actually help her not to have competed in the team event.

"I actually think I was lucky not to have done the team event," she said. "I am sure they were all under a lot of pressure to do well for their countries. Just doing one day of competition can be quite stressful. For me to have done the team event and then the singles with just a week or two apart would have been really difficult."

Kim has long declared Sochi will be her last Olympics and last competition. Though her legacy in figure skating is already secure -- she has two world titles and won the 2010 Olympic gold with 228.56 points, the world record under the current judging system -- more history is at stake this time as she chases her second straight gold.

Kim said she won't get caught up in the hype.

"I know people are interested in my chances of repeating as the Olympic champion but I am not paying attention to that," she said.

"It does bother me a little bit because I haven't even had an official practice. I may skate well or I may not. Whatever happens, I will accept the result without regret."

Kim also said she will also try not to get too ahead of herself.

"I might get distracted if I keep thinking about this being my last competition," she said. "To me, it will be just another event.

Like I have done all along, I will try to concentrate on the task at hand, and then I will feel relieved at the end of it all." (Yonhap)
