The court on Sunday ordered the prosecutor’s office to reveal the investigation records related to the 2011 Nate hacking case.
The Seoul Administrative Court ruled in favor of a 43-year-old man surnamed Park in a case against the head of the Seoul District Prosecutor’s Office.
Park filed a suit against the prosecutor’s office when his request for investigation records was rejected.
SK Communications Co.’s portal site Nate suffered attacks from hackers in July 2011, resulting in a personal data leak of 35 million users. Prosecutors suspended the probe on the case the following year, citing the unknown whereabouts of the suspect.
As for the disclosure issue, the prosecutor’s office claimed that if such investigation records on SK Communications’ security system were revealed, the suspects could destroy evidence, or another hacker could attempt a copycat crime.
In the ruling, however, the court said much of the company’s security system has already been disclosed during the damage lawsuit filed by Nate users, and the company has most likely taken measures in response.
To prevent the possible destruction of evidence and copycat crimes, the court ordered only a limited range of information to be revealed, such as the statements of victims.
