Sheinbaum says identity of group younger than BTS will be announced later
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said a K-pop group will visit Mexico in connection with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung's trip to the country later this month, without revealing the group's identity.
Sheinbaum made the remarks during her regular morning press briefing Thursday while confirming Lee's planned visit to Mexico in September.
Asked by a local reporter about the purpose of her meeting with Lee and the issues they would discuss, Sheinbaum pointed to economic and cultural ties between the two countries before mentioning the K-pop group's visit.
"We have commercial, cultural and other interests with the Republic of Korea. One of the K-pop groups, younger than BTS, is coming to Mexico with him," Sheinbaum said, adding that further details would be announced later.
She did not identify the group or disclose the date of Lee's visit.
Stray Kids appears to be among the possible candidates, given its existing schedule in Mexico. The group, whose members are younger than those of BTS, is set to hold its own festival, "Straycity," at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City on Sept. 25-26.
It remains unclear, however, whether Stray Kids is the group Sheinbaum was referring to or whether its scheduled visit is connected to Lee's trip.
Stray Kids member Felix also took part in an official event involving Lee and French President Emmanuel Macron during Macron's state visit to Korea earlier this year. Felix attended a state luncheon hosted by Lee at Cheong Wa Dae in Seoul on April 3 following a summit between the two leaders.
Felix attended in his capacity as an honorary ambassador for the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France. Macron greeted Felix and other Stray Kids members at the luncheon, which brought together about 140 political, business and cultural figures from the two countries.
