Lee was beloved TV host and philanthropist

Lee Sang-yong, affectionately known as “Popeye” to generations of South Koreans, died on Friday at the age of 81. According to his agency, Emade Entertainment, Lee collapsed on his way home after receiving treatment for cold symptoms at a hospital earlier that morning. He was rushed back to the hospital but ultimately passed away.
Long associated with vitality and optimism, Lee was a cherished television host, philanthropist and cultural figure whose career spanned more than five decades.
He became a household name through children’s TV shows in the 1970s and 80s and military entertainment shows in the 1990s.
He earned the nickname “Uncle Popeye” while hosting the popular KBS children’s TV program "Let’s Gather and Sing."
From 1989, Lee became nationally beloved as the host of MBC’s military entertainment program “Friendship Stage.”
Over the years, he appeared on numerous other popular programs, including KBS’ “National Singing Contest” and “Hometown Report,” and MBC’s “Evergreen Life.”
In addition to his television career, he was a committed philanthropist, particularly dedicated to supporting children with heart disease.
