A US Republican congresswoman on Thursday introduced a bill requiring the president to notify Congress and provide a report on the economic and security objectives of new tariffs 48 hours before they take effect.
Rep. Young Kim, a Korean American lawmaker, submitted the Reviewing Economic and Protection Objectives for the Reciprocal Tariffs Act, as President Donald Trump has made a flurry of tariff announcements amid concerns that new duties could lead to higher prices and slower economic growth.
The bill calls on the president to notify Congress and offer a "justification" report of the objectives for an increase or decrease in tariffs two days before they go into effect, while directing the US Trade Representative to testify before relevant committees when tariffs take effect.
The bill is intended for future administrations regardless of political affiliation, her office said.
"While tariffs can be an important strategic tool to help level the playing field between the United States and other countries, long-term tariffs can be a tax that hike prices and hurt the bottom line for American families and small businesses," Kim said.
"The American people deserve certainty, which is why I'm proud to lead the REPORT Act to ensure the executive branch is transparent with the American people on the intended economic and security objectives behind enacting tariffs, especially in the long-term," she added.
