US President Donald Trump's administration will rescind Biden-era restrictions on advanced artificial intelligence chip exports, a Commerce Department spokesperson was quoted as saying Wednesday, as it seeks to replace them with a much simpler rule.

Reuters reported that it plans to revoke the Framework for Artificial Intelligence Diffusion, which was issued by former President Joe Biden's government in January. It is meant to keep advanced computing power in the United States and among its allies, and further curb the flow of key technologies to China and other countries of concern.

The department's spokesperson said that the framework, set to take effect on May 15, is "overly complex, overly bureaucratic, and would stymie American innovation, and that the Trump administration will replace it with a much simpler regulation, according to Reuters.

AI chipmakers in the US reportedly opposed the framework as it could get in the way of their efforts to sell their products overseas at a time of growing demand for AI applications worldwide. (Yonhap)
