South Korean midfielder Lee Kang-in remained on the bench as his club, Paris Saint-Germain, advanced to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League.

PSG lost to Aston Villa 3-2 in the second leg of the quarterfinals at the top European club competition at Villa Park in Birmingham, England, on Tuesday but hung on for a 5-4 win on aggregate to move on to the next stage.

PSG claimed the first leg 3-1 last week, with Lee also on the bench.

PSG are now a step closer to a treble. They have already clinched their fourth consecutive domestic title in Ligue 1 and are favored against Stade de Reims in the final of the French Cup scheduled for May 24.

PSG blew a 2-0 lead in the second leg after Achraf Hakimi's goal in the 11th minute and Nuno Mendes' marker 16 minutes later.

Youri Tielemans put the English visitors on the board in the 34th minute before John McGinn netted the equalizer in the 55th minute. Aston Villa went ahead in the match with Ezri Konsa's goal two minutes later, but they couldn't get the two extra goals needed for the aggregate lead.

PSG will play in their second straight semifinals in pursuit of their first Champions League title. Last year, they lost to the German side Borussia Dortmund by 2-0 on aggregate in the semis.

Dortmund lost to FC Barcelona 5-3 on aggregate in this year's quarterfinals despite their 3-1 victory in the second leg at home Tuesday.

Lee has not played for PSG since suffering an ankle injury during a World Cup qualifying match for South Korea on March 20.

Even before the injury, Lee's playing time had been on a decline. He has not played a full match since the round of 16 at the French Cup on Feb. 4, and only two of his past nine appearances have come in a start.

Lee is one of two South Korean players still alive in the UEFA Champions League, alongside Kim Min-jae of Bayern Munich.

Bayern lost their opening leg of the quarterfinals against Inter Milan 2-1 in Munich last week, and their return leg is Wednesday in Milan.

The other quarterfinal match will pit the defending champions Real Madrid against Arsenal. The Gunners won the opening leg 3-0. (Yonhap)
