Disgraced former President Yoon Suk Yeol returned to his personal home in southern Seoul on Friday, passing rallies held both by his supporters and his opponents who had gathered there.
He was required to leave the presidential residence following the confirmation ruling of his impeachment a week prior.
Yoon and his wife Kim Keon Hee arrived at their home in the Acrovista apartment complex in Seocho-gu, southern Seoul, on Friday evening, after they were seen moving out of the official presidential residence in Hannam-dong around the scheduled time of 5 p.m.
A number of opponents and supporters of Yoon gathered near the complex, chanting slogans aimed at Yoon and sometimes against each other throughout most of the day.
Supporters of Yoon shouted at anti-Yoon protestors, "Lee Jae-myung will be arrested today, what are you going to do?" — poking at Yoon's biggest political rival and leader of the Democratic Party of Korea — while protestors shot back: "Yoon Suk Yeol has been expelled, what will you do?"
A banner commending the former presidential couple with the phrase "Great efforts" was hung earlier in the day at the Acrovista building by residents.
South Korean police dispatched some 260 officers to the area to prevent possible clashes.
Yoon's impeachment was confirmed by a Constitutional Court ruling on April 4, backing up his expulsion from the presidency for what it called unlawful and unconstitutional actions that "betrayed the trust of the people." Yoon was charged with insurrection and power abuse for his declaration of martial law on Dec. 3, 2024, after which he allegedly issued illegal orders to high-ranking military officials and police chiefs.
