A 65-year-old man who killed a friend of over 20 years was recently sentenced to 35 years in jail, according to officials on Monday.

The Suncheon branch of the Gwangju District Court found that he had intended to rob the 70-year-old victim, who had helped out the defendant frequently by preparing food for him, taking pity upon his financial situation.

The defendant broke into the victim's home in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province, at 11:14 p.m. on Nov. 3 of last year. He was unexpectedly confronted by the victim and stabbed her with a knife.

"The (defendant's) crime is heinous in nature as he betrayed and victimized the person who had helped him out of a difficult situation," the court said in its ruling.
